Have you eaten at ToDai?

I hate buffets. My mom would always complain about me when I go with the family because I don't eat that much. After that, when my mom ask if I wanted to go to a buffet, I give her a HELL no. I'd rather sit down and get some quality food at a restaurant because not only will it taste better, it will be significantly cheaper for me since I don't eat very much.

Meh-- it's ok. It looks less appetizing in buffet format, than when you go to a non-buffet restaurant. You have to admit, though, that it's worth the money, especially for the sushi.

its not really worth it, i'd rather go out and get some real sushi and pay a few bucks more, the food there can be okay, but overall its not too great.

Depends on the Todai. If you're in LA, the in the Beverly Center is suppose to be better than the one on Wilshire.

i think the one on wilshire is the bastard child of the todai chain, since it's just sushi and shabu shabu.

beverly center is like the traditional todai's i've been to.

in socal there's also onami. never been there though.

dinner is not worth it. i've gone twice during dinner. once with family and once with a friend. the only extra things you'll see there is all you can drink and small little lobsters...but in my opinion they look like big shrimps.

i recommend going during lunch, it's 10 bucks cheaper.

I'd rather go to a regular sushi place. Todai's food taste doesn't have flavor and is rather bland to me. Especially with the dinner prices, its not worth it.

I wouldn't go there for sushi alone. Expensive, and it ain't that great. If you're going to eat other things, I would go during lunch where it's cheaper.

You try the Lighthouse in Santa Monica. I think that was a Todai's or something before they owners got divorced or something. Same thing though, I always thought for the dinner price you pay more but there's more sushi selection along with a bit fancier buffet (dungeoness crabs, etc...).

edit: only thing, I just eat the ikura and run 🙂

um... hard to say, coz the food serves there IS pretty darn good.... but, why stuff yourself to death so that you feel "I got my money worth."

everything I go there I eat myself to death.... I can be equally (quantative and quality) as full when eating elsewhere for $30 bucks.

i went there on Wednesday for lunch. They have a huge selection of sushi and japanese things... it's really good.. but not worth the price for dinner.

Todai is alright... they have a couple up here, the one in Daly City is the best one i've been to. The one in Concord (Sun Valley Mall) is pretty bad, I haven't been to the one in Pleasanton yet, but I hear its suspose to be the best.

I passed by the one on wilshire in LA a couple times when I was down there... It seems so small and low key compared to other Todai's i've visited.

That said, 25-30 dollars a head for sushi dinner is a rip even if it is all you can eat. There are several mom and pops, hole in the wall places in the Bay Area that do all you can eat sushi which is really, really good. I'm sure you could find similar venue in LA

onami > todai

their fish is fresher and the cuts are more generous. todai has a larger/better selection of desserts though, but i go to eat sushi primarily and not dessert. heh.

It is not worth it IMO. The quality of the sushi is very poor, and the rest of the buffet is mediocre at best. And for $30/person, the dinner price is way out of line for what you get.
With sushi, it is quality, not quantity, that is most important.

If you go with someone on your birthday you get your meal free if they pay full price - DO IT!!! (at least the one I went to in the WalnutCreek/Concord area was). So with sodas and small tip (they don't really do anything) it was around $30-$35 for two people....which is great!!!

True. It is a decent deal on a birthday. I've done that more than once. But that's about it IMO.

Expensive and not very tasty. It's only good if you like sushi. They have a lots of sushi varieties. But if you want hot food, forgetaboutit. I rather get a sub at the Quzino next door.

I go on my b-day so I can get the free on your next visit coupon.

agree, their dessert is excellent. anyways, how much is O-nami?

The Todai here in puente hills mall(city of industry), must be a lot better than the ones you've been to. They even have king jumbo shrimp here, and they give you an entire one. That's worth like $8 alone. They have everything, even freshly custom made crepes for dessert. They had gourmet pastries with all kinds of fillings. They're always packed, so the fish doesn't stay out too long before they are replaced, and the fish generally was pretty fresh. They had over 10 different kinds of sushi at the sushi bar here, and the sushi bar is only about 10% of the buffet. They have chow mien, teriyaki chicken, tempura fried shrimp, fried rice, tempura fried vegetables, and a lot more.
Needless to say, I ate so much, I hurled chunks all over the place, literally. I was still fine when I left, just extremely bloated and wanting to puke. Holding it in as much as I could, and as I walked out of the door of puente hills mall, I lost it. The crazy thing is when these two kids were leaving, they were gathering around it gawking at it. They let me back in after I puked, and I went to go eat some more 😀
