You Might Owe Florida Tax

Florida law imposes a 6% use tax on out-of-state purchases if sales tax was not paid at the time of purchase. The use tax normally applies to items purchased outside Florida, including another country, which are brought or delivered into this state and would have been taxed if purchased in Florida.

Examples include:

* Purchases made through the Internet.
* Mail-order catalog purchases.
* Purchases made in another country.
* Furniture purchased from dealers located in another state.
* Computer equipment ordered from out-of-state vendors advertising in magazines.

If an out-of-state seller fails to collect sales tax, the burden to voluntarily comply with Florida law is yours. You must submit payment directly to the Florida Department of Revenue. This payment is required by section 212.06(8), Florida Statutes.

yeah i heard about this a long time ago. Apparently some states even have a specific section on their tax forms now for this. too hard to track though, i'd imagine the only real people that get punished are the ones already being investigated

Yes, it's here in California as well, called the "use tax". Line 51 of the tax return. It's voluntary compliance though, and it'd be very difficult for the IRS to track you down on it unless it's a ridiculous amount of merchandise. A lot of people don't even know what it is so they miss it completely.

Does it seem to anyone else that laws like these are really overextending the states bounds? It's like they're saying "We own you ANYWHERE you go in the world, through sales tax." What right does my home state have to levy taxes on what I do outside of their jurisdiction?

Hehe :laugh:

I take it NFS4 that you have not done your state taxs yet, as we have the same thing in NC.

Yup, nothing new here - New York state has it too and it is "voluntary" as well (they even have a line for it on the State Income Tax form). I just check "No" and go on with my return :)
