Some people say things like the difference between 4K and 2560x1440 is negligible at 27". This is nonsense, and I guarantee that most of these people have never actually made the comparison themselves. I had the 28" 4K monitor beside a U2711, and the difference was huge. They also like to throw around the "4k is pointless below X size" (usually 32-40"), but this is also false. Super high density displays have their merits for desktop computing, and we're not even close to the point where increasing density will cease to improve IQ (especially in gaming). The point of diminishing returns is debatable, and there are very valid concerns about scaling, but in the current market there's something for everyone (if you're able to win the QC lottery).

still only 2 played in 4k on a 4k screen, wow, and it s so common to read pple pontificating about the "useless 4k".

Me too and if it takes .1 sec longer to fire up i cringe, why, I couldn't go back to my old 32" and it would be a bit pricey to replace. Mine is a curved Samsung TV. There are a coupe of downsides for sure. While I no longer play competitively (actually did at one time) FPS, this screen does have some tears in FPS, i never notice when Im playing but if I watch somebody else I can see them, you need to want to see them though, almost un- noticeable if you are not looking for it. Also the screen is not as side view friendly as my monitors where. As a spectator looking from a side stuff on the extreme left (if you are on the right) can be a bit blurry. Not for me in the center, just spectators. SO Hardcore video people need to wait. The biggest downside and some have mentioned it here, is the grunt it takes to power it. I was on a 980GTX and went to the 1080 gtx, and still find a game or two that cant pull it off full settings, not many (i consider 30+ acceptable, some of you wont, most my games (almost all) are closer to 60+) I think one more generation of Video card should put us in 4k for all area.. which brings us to the worst thing.. it costs a boatload.. actual screen is $700-1200, dependent on what you buy, MIne was $900 on black Friday (still lists for about $1200 today, but its a generation back), $600 video card, and you do need a current PC ($1000+ if you build, less if its upgrading).

In the end I could not go back to the small screen, games looked NEW again to me.. now the NEW has wore off, but I wouldn't want to switch back.. Even for work type stuff its a huge change. you can get smaller 4K monitors but throw up 4 excel,word, Chrome screens and read them easy (i'm old) compared to a smaller 4k. I use mine for 90% gaming though, and have never once felt it was a bad purchase. As prices come down i may change that opinion, only as better screens will be cheaper then mine though, not that i regret the size change.

I'm using a 32" 4k Samsung flat monitor and I notice a bump up in detail in games. Not as much increase in detail as a 27" 4k would have but I wanted to try a larger size screen. Didn't buy a 55" 4k Samsung or other brand tv because the textures and other details would be less than my 1440 resolution monitor listed below. I go looking for texture detail, I can't help it, I'm into mainly visuals in games.

But if you guys with the 55"+ screens say that the larger immersive size, colors and other benefits of a good 55" make up for any loss in detail compared to my 1440 rig then I'll probably buy a 55" 4k tv. It's not the money, it's the graphics detail I'm worried about that could affect the overall experience of gaming on the big screen. Or I should get out more and try a demo at Best Buy. They are generally ok with setting up special gaming demo arrangements.

I'm deciding what to get for a new PC monitor. I'd love a 34" curved screen I hear such good things about, but it just doesn't make sense when I want a big screen tv also.

So I'm leaning towards using one big screen (65" or so) for both - deciding whether to save and repair an 8 year old 1080p or buy a new set.

I have a couple of 40" 4K UHD TVs I used as monitors for a couple of mini-PCs of mine. I did play some Skyrim (vanilla vanilla) @ 4K60 on my RX 460 4GB Nitro card, and i5-6400 @ 4.45Ghz. Played alright, although I could have probably used a high-res texture pack (I think that's a free DLC?).

I "bought" one for a LAN party a few years ago and returned it afterwards. It was cool, but not monetarily feasible to replace my triple monitor setup.

Biggest issue is non-scaling UI elements. Replaying Shogun 2: Total War at 4k (looks pretty!) on a 27" screen and the UI elements are at the edge of readability.

At least in Warhammer: Total War you can scale the UI so you can actually see things.

Also, it's very pretty. I've never actually gamed at 1080 as I upgraded from a 20" 1600x1200 CRT (a great, but small, Sony) to a 30" 2560x1600 HP. Wow, that was awesome! So big! So many pixels!!

But the LG 4k I have now has the benefit of being a better quality IPS panel than the 30" IPS panel as well as having more pixels.

4k is really nice and I can't wait for Vega and >60Hz Freesync screens. GSync is just too expensive so AMD it is.

I own a 40" 4K monitor as my display on my desktop, so yes. Only running a 970gtx right now, but since I mainly play Blizzard games, it has been plenty. Waiting for Vega to drop and then I'll give Doom another shot. Looks great but I definitely need to lower a few settings to get that to run on my display.

I own a 4k screen, a lovely 32", 60hz, 4ms, IPS one. Been playing Tomb Raider on it, looks absolutely beautiful in places, it was an expensive investment but it should last the next 8-10 years like my old 30" 2560x1600 IPS did.

How does playing the game at 1080 look and letting the monitor scale up to 4k? Much scaling artifacts or other issues, or is it more or less as good as 1080 native?

I played on a 4K60hz monitor, but prefer 1440@120/144hz by far.

4K for work is great.
