My uncle has one of those. That thing can be so much fun and annoying as hell to other people. :)

I've never seen it, but I heard it. Maybe they aren't doing it these days.

It's done to enforce the speed limit.

I've passed many cops driving slow in the right lane because they wanna take the next exit, just to have the person in front of them slow down to like 10 below the limit..

In Florida it's the law that you have to move over, or slow down 20 mph less than the speed limit, more details on this law here.

I like the idiots who, whenever a cop is spotted, (either going in the opposite direction or having someone pulled over on my side of the road) will slow dow 5 MPH or more for several miles.
I always wonder, do they think they are getting "Credit" for those 5+ MPH under, that will apply if they do get caught?

OT: Another pet peeve of mine: A certain "ethnic group" of people, strictly driving exactly the posted speed limit (Obviously because they have no insurance and/or license). You are doing 5+ MPH over, so you go around them. They throttle up so as to keep pace with you, gaining a few MPH for a short distance, thinking that if a cops gonna pull ANYONE over, it will be you and not them because you are in the passing lane.
When this happens, I floor it to blast around them, then go back to my set Cruise Control speed!

Not always true. I've passed cops and have seen others pass cops when they are going less than the posted limit.

a friend of mine saw a guy pass a cop....over the speed limit.

i believe he told me "he couldnt have possibly gotten his bumper 5 feet past the cruiser before the lights went on"

I passed a cop once on the freeway in a downpour. He promptly told me over his loud speaker to slow it down. I was already going slightly under the speed limit and had good tires on my car...don't know what his problem was.

i was driving to school one morning, pulled out onto the highway, sped up to keep w/ traffic..... a minute or two later, i check my rearview mirror to find everyone WAY behind me... then as i look to my life, i see a state police car pulling past me... i was like":Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q:Q!" i was going 65, speed limit was 55.

in maryland if you get a "moving violation" before your 18months are up, you have to start over (18 months of no moving violation for unrestricted license). not to mention the huge increase in insurance :p

i've passed sherrif's and highway patrol before... Sometimes they are driving 65-70 in a slow lane (speed limit of 70), i'll pass going 72-73, never had a problem.

That is one of the tricks cops use in states where radar detectors are illegal.

Ummm...states? I think they are only illegal in one state...Virginia. Why would they do that when they have the guns to detect them?

Just checked...only two Virigina and DC...

The use of a radar detector in a passenger vehicle is legal in all states with the exception of Virginia, Washington DC. and on military bases.

I dunno of this happening applying to any particular ethnic group, but I see it happen ALL the time. I'll pass someone on the left while going down a two-lane highway, and suddenly they'll rediscover their gas pedal, catching up with and/or even passing me.

What's even more annoying, though are the two following scenarios:

1) You're driving along at whatever speed on a highway; someone in a lane to your right, traveling at a substantially slower (i.e. 10+ mph different) rate and who is obviously oblivious to everything going on around him/her, changes lanes not more than 20 feet in front of you--without a blinker, I might add--forcing you to brake so you don't end up in their backset. And all the while, if the person had waited all of 3 or 4 seconds, they could've changed lanes after you passed, as there were no cars behind you.

2) This is especially annoying on two-lane roads: you're driving along in the left lane, seeing as how you're going faster than the cars on the right. You come up to someone who's changing into the left lane to pass; right on, go for it. But, just as this person changes into your (i.e. the left) lane, they slow down to the EXACT same speed as the person they were apparently attempting to get around. I hate it when people fail to realize the proper dynamics of the left and right lanes. Especially when there ends up being a HUGE trail of cars behind the person on the left because they a) aren't paying attention, and b) aren't letting anyone pass.

But getting back to the OP's post, I've passed officers before (going at most ~5mph over the limit) without problems. I wouldn't risk anything more than that, though.

eh. i'll pass cops if i'm doing less than 5 over the limit. especially for city police on the freeway, they're just crusiing along in the slow lane and aren't going to make a fuss unless you're outrageously speeding.

It's a law to slow down next to a cop that has pulled someone over.

you are also supposed to get out of the closest lane. (If I remember, maybe im lieing about this one).

True, but what annoys me are when all 4 lanes of traffic suddenly start braking in front of me when a cop has someone pulled over in the breakdown lane.

this is only the case in certain states. we don't have to do that in CA, though it is obviously the SMART thing to do.

You're not technically "law abiding" if you have to slow down to get under the speed limit...

You can still lose traction even with "good tires" if you turn/break suddenly.

If the cop is not doing the speed limit I go right on by. What is he going to do? Give me a ticket for not following his lead? Cops don't intimidate me, I know how to drive.

So don't turn/brake suddenly with poor traction...any good driver knows that.

The real answer is that cops have to deal with a lot of accidents caused by idiots who can't drive, so they tend to have a low opinion of everyone else's driving ability.

What if you have too? Car spins out infront of you, Large pot hole, deer runs infront of you. List goes on...

Yes yes, I know that wasn't your point. But what I'm trying to say is even the best driver will crash sooner or later.
