20k+ a month? Hmm, that sounds like a nice job, are there any vacancies in the region? 😀
yeh, you can take that kid's place after a bad deal goes down and he gets a bullet to the head.

Unless the news team was lying they were indeed denied access to the worse ones.
yes, our media never lies or misportrays anything.

One thing that I think needs to change is elementary level education. Starting in the middle school and junior high years, kids are able to pick classes based on their skill level in various subjects. In elementary school, if a kid is doing well in everything but math, they can either be held back and take the whole grade over again, or move up when they aren't ready in that particular subject.

True, there are some programs to help those lagging behind in certain subjects, but they often don't help enough.

Then your other reply about having the best new coverage wasn't quite correct 😉

My wife home schools both of our kids. We have several pretty intensive curriculum's that we choose lesson plans from. It only takes us about 3 hours a day to cover what is covered in most whole day schooling sessions. There is also no expected homework at this point. Its all taken care of in the curriculum. The attention our kids kid is one on one. Its the kind of attention that parents should be giving their kids when they try to complete homework. I think that most parents just want the schools to do it all so they don't have to worry about it.

Have you been to a public school lately? Some of them are ridiculously bad!

My high school used to be a 'good' high school to send your kids. Now it's horrible because the district decided it didn't wanna pay high salary to many of the older teachers. Within 3 years there was only ONE teacher in my old high school with more than 10 years seniority....that school is garbage now, test scores are down for the last 3 years just cuz the district wanted to save a few pennies

It makes sense to a degree. If the worst schools let access to news groups filming inside their school, it would bring more exposure to the problems inside of them and you can be damn sure that the state would bring a hammer down on these schools.

My old school district forced out all the older teachers because they were making a considerable amount of money. Teachers there for 30+ years were pulling in $90k+, so they offered them retirement packages that made it stupid to stay and teach. The new teachers in the district make ~$40k, and they're just cycling through them until they have to offer them longer contracts or tenure, and then they're let go.

Thats exactly what they are doing in my old district...really a screw job for the kids.

My World History teacher in high school was one of the best teachers I ever had. He made the class interesting, and I missed one question on his 294 question final. My U.S. History teacher, however, was worse than useless. His class was so "exciting" it made seppuku look like a viable alternative.

He had some of his curriculum on the marker board when my folks went there for parent teacher night. They asked what the drivel on the board was. He said, "Hey, that's as good as it gets, I have tenure and they can't get rid of me." He later threw a 3 hole punch at a student and was bumped up to administration to keep him out of contact with students.

The older teachers at my district were all quality teachers. One taught AP Chem and Chemistry, another taught AP English Lit and some English elective courses, one teaches (still there) Italian, another taught AP Bio and Bio. The only one I didn't have was the one who taught the English electives, and they were all very good teachers. Stern, but they made sure you learned the material.

I hated teachers that were that boring. My world history teacher was an assistant football coach and I learned nothing in that class. He was also later bumped to administration because he complained that by teaching he couldn't focus enough time on football.

My American History teacher was amazing though! He was the teacher everyone wanted. When we studied WW2 we got to watch clips from Band of Brothers. We got to simulate Wall Street in the 1870-1890s....to teach us the importance of the railroad on american life we had to play Railroad Tycoon 2 against our classmates in multiplayer sessions. It was tournament style. I ended up winning cuz I was the most shrewd player. It was fun and I learned.

My American Government teacher was the same way. In his classroom we were encouraged to bring in posters, wall mounts, pictures whatever and post them in his room to stylize it...that was good and fun but his teaching style was impeccable. He ran his classes like college lectures and again made learning fun. We had to memorize the Constitution and Bill of Rights which seems like an obvious thing to learn in government but none of the other government teachers required that....

And guess what....both my american history and american government teachers were pushed out with buyouts....replaced by idiots who didn't know WTF they were teaching.

it depends on the teaching.

i loved my high school (student body of 450 and several AP classes were offered) and teachers were hilarious too. one time, a student was falling asleep; the physics teacher took the chalk eraser and threw at him (he didn't throw at him violently thought.) he woke up in agony with a block of white chalk on his head. the whole class was laughing as he walked to bathroom awkwardly to clean the halk off.

I found that in most cases, the teachers the students labeled as "hard asses" were actually the best. They were so labeled because they actually demanded that you do the work and learn the material.

This guy was not labeled as a hard ass though, just a jackass. 😛

And I thought the level of education had gone down a lot in Europe since I attended school 😛

I don't think America has the worse schools, only the best news coverage. You could find these problems in every country. China? ha ha, like you'd ever see a news report like this from China."

I cannot verify the video easily simply because I am nowhere near the US. But if you'd want to compare the quality level of the schools you might want to at least compare it with other Western countries (like they did with that Belgium school), rather than taking a dictatorship as example. (Unless you see the US as being fully comparible to a Communist dictatorship of course)

Great video, but it still missed another big problem. THE PARENTS!

While I agree with the unions being a massive problem the parents are the ones in power, they should be working overtime to get those votes for vouchers and charters to pass.

Also on that note, if that lady's 18 year old can't read WTF has she been doing the last 18 years? Treating school like it's a babysitter? Reading needs to start at home before the kid even starts 1st grade.

yeap.

you need to take time with the child. wich she did not.

i feel for the kid. nobody made him work at it. how he was able to go through all of those years of school not being able to read? its fricken insane.

You think that is scary...you should see colleges. So may people are going through college and not even knowing the bare minimum. These are the people who building our bridges....sacry thought.

ask any hs kid right now why the schools sucks. I'll be straight and to the point, there is no discipline. I was one of the dumb kids in the video, im sure my grammar in this post will help support that claim. All it takes is one student to start disrupting a class and the whole thing goes down the drain and turns into a joke. The moment a kid starts misbehaving he needs to be immediately removed from the class(maybe not permanently), THAT INSTANT. What happens is there is one class clown that'll go his entire effort to try and disrupt the class, get people to laugh, and most of all DIS-RESPECT the teacher. The instant that the teacher is disrespected, and the student at fault remains in the class, the teacher looses the battle. The student now has the power, other students start respecting him, it all of sudden becomes cool to start being disobedient. There are more reasons to this as well, international students bringing down the standards, and other things come into play.

The most important though is discipline, as long as the teacher has the power their agenda, albeit hopefully an agenda with good intentions will prevail. If the student has the power his agenda will prevail. Standardized testing is not the solution, it is a part of it.

Yes, the little assholes ruin it for the people who want to learn. But, the schools aren't allowed to discipline and the parents won't. My dad works in the public schools and he used to always bitch about this.

The classroom that they showed that was out of control seems about right. Discipline is a major problem in school's, this is one of the reasons that private schools often do much better. The more money you give to the schools, the more they will spend on sports.

It really depends on where you go to public school. Some states have higher standards for becoming a teacher, while some districts work on hiring only qualified people to teach. Where I went to school (Syosset, NY (on Long Island), was one of the best public schools in the area, beating out a lot of the local private schools too.

Here they close down schools that do not perform well enough. If the results are below standards and they fail to improve in a certain time they are forced to close.

That's something they should do in the US too. Instead of just giving them more money without looking at the cause of the problems.
i guess your teachers' unions aren't as strong as ours. they'd never ever let that happen.

the social security rules changed as well. lots of older teachers across the country left 2 years ago.

a lot of what is wrong with public education starts with the parents. either the parents don't care, or are too busy trying to support the family to take time to care. that's probably the biggest reason for craptacular public schools. but you'll never ever see a politician blame the parents. and you can't fail a kid and hold him back a grade because the parents will moan and complain about how you're mistreating their little johnny. when that might be exactly what is needed.

the next thing that is wrong is that the students don't want to learn. again, this probably goes back to the parents. my mother is a math teacher at a suburban high school here in houston. she has to make 3 or 4 different forms per class period for each test. why? because the kids from first period will post the questions and answers online before the end of second period. even before the kids were doing that, cheating was rampant. she'd make 4 different forms, tell the kids there were four different forms, and they'd still cheat off their neighbors who had different form. additionally, plenty of kids text message all day in class. why kids are allowed to have cell phones in school, i'll never know. take them away and the parents complain, 'what if there is an emergency?' well you do the same thing we did 15 years ago, call the school.

the last reason is the teachers themselves. the teachers unions are incredibly conservative when it comes to their industry (the political conservatives are far more progressive in this particular area). no school closures, no firing of bad teachers (how do you determine if a teacher is bad, anyway?), no school choice, etc. etc. as another example, a recent (presidential i think) panel determined that standard education be done in 10 grades and kids who don't want to be in school past 16 could leave and go to technical school or whatnot. kids who wanted to go to college or stay could do so for the last 2 years. that would enable resources to be spent on kids who wanted to stay. the teachers unions poo-pooed that idea. well, talking to my father i discovered that was exactly how it was back when he was growing up. after you turned 16, the state wouldn't make you stay in school, but if you wanted to come back in a few years and finish those 2 grades you could. that may be exactly what we need. some people have to be hit in the head with the real world before figuring out what is what. but it'll never happen.
