Well.
I'll tell you what...
If your friend returned the dog because it pooped too much - then the dog ended up way better than it would have if it stayed with an owner that just didn't care.

Seriously, you guys, if you decide to get a pet, don't just give it away. Better yet, think before you get it, to make sure that under no circumstances the pet is going to end up in someone else's house. If nothing else, it's like a great stress to them.
I have owned two dogs in my lifetime, have many friends with dogs, and I can assure you, anything that barks can be trained not to poop in the house - that is, if you are willing to provide enough outside time for your pet. If you don't like walking with your dog, or if you think you will not have enough time (an average dog needs 3-4 hours a day) to walk with your god - then just get a fish or something.
Really, before you buy anything, you're supposed to research on the animal, to make sure you can provide the necessary care for it.
To the guy with the parrot - what did you expect? Parrots need a lot of communication. They need you to play with them, if you are not willing to provide them with companions of their own breed. They need a lot of toys to play with, too.
Parrots pluck their feathers bald and even kill themselves if they are alone and bored. What would you feel like if someone lock you up in the cage without any communication whatsoever?

I just hate it when people get a pet without knowing anything about it, and then give it away because they don't like something that the pets do naturally - they could have found out those things ahead of time and save the trouble. I really don't care for the owner's trouble, I just feel bad for an animal that would go through that.

I hope you do this at a facility or in a subdivision that's rural (assuming you have an animal farm)...I did computer work for a family that had 6 dogs and 3 rooms full of cats...the place reeked and was definitely unsanitary. They had two high school/middle school daughters sharing this filth. Soon after the town fined them and Animal Rights came in....there was an article about it.

I worked several years for a Vet for the Zoo and private/exotic animals and most of the so-called do gooders would have been better donating the animals to no-kill shelters. Malnutrition and maltreatment of disease and problems abounded....people have a hard enough time trying to afford to keep one or two animals healthy yet alone 5 or more.

Chihuahuas are stupid anyway. Should have put a bullet into his head.

We were given two rabbits. We did not want them. EVAR! We kept them for about 6 months and then gave them to the Shelter with a donation.

Well, better to give it away / return it than have the animal face a life of neglect.

I agree that you should think about these things before you do it, but ??? if it happens, it happens. It's not like the dog factory made one more dog when you took yours home, if you really find out that you aren't a dog person and can't handle the responsibility - well, find someone who can and give it a good home.

I want a dog, and have come close a couple times - but I'm not sure I could deal with a puppy. I need a good well trained low mileage used dog (maybe a 99 or 2000 model) which of course are the kind nobody is getting rid of...

We returned a terrier a month or so after because he was uncontrollably chewing everything in sight. A week later we missed him too much and called the pound. They said the dog was "taken" already. We weren't sure if they euthanized him or if they were telling the truth. Either way, it was sad. But we picked up a Pomeranian from another pound a couple years later and love him like a family member. I guess if we never gave away the first one, we wouldn't have our Pom... so it's good and bad in a way...

Well, I dont know if this is what you mean, but I had a dog, and before she died she had nine puppies. We gave away 7 of them and kept two.

course chances are it'll be put to death. course people wash their hands of this. if people can read pages and pages of video card/cpu/motherboard reviews..they deserve a beating if they buy pets on a whim and mess em up.

Agreed :)
To me, getting a pet is like getting a member of the family. I could never just turn them out.
Agreed :)

I agree as well. My dog's almost like a person, in that I can read his emotional state. He's a member of the family, and there's no way I'd give him up.

in taking in a pet, you are taking in a member of the family, and are now obligated to take care of that pet. would you give away your child because they pooped on the rug?

er.. maybe bad example. would you give away your child because they were hyperactive?

I used to own a German Shepherd...absolutely beautiful dog. I don;t think he was purebred but he still looked like a textbook german shepherd anyway. Too bad he would bark at all hours of the night. We kept him in a dog house at night when the weather was warm. Our area has alot of deer roaming around so he would be up all night barking. Eventually our neighbors filed a complaint and the towen threatened to fine us if the complaints continued. We had no choice but to give him away. We were all set to take him down to an animal shelter but luckily a cop buddy of ours took our dog in and sent him to training. Last we heard "Max" was doing border patrol along California/Mexico border. We still miss him but at least this way we were assured he would be well taken care of.

I could never give a pet away. Way my family sees it is if we are taking in a new pet its part of the family. I dunno, guess some people do grow a strong bond with their pets. For as much dumb stuff my dog does i wouldnt trade her for anything in the world.

I picked up a 16 week old puppy from the shelter last week... she's a mutt just like I wanted (I wanted the opposite of a purebred cause I could care less about dog breed snobs and "papers"). She just turned 17 weeks old yesterday and she's a poop and piss machine. I have to clean up after her when she has accidents in the house, but she's getting better. After a week I've got her whining when she has to go out and now accidents are about once a day instead of 5 times a day. I already fell in love with her, she's so cute :D

EDIT: The obligatory "I GOT A PUPPY!!! [pics]" thread will be here as soon as I get a digital camera or can borrow one from my friends.

Hi,

We own our home. Bought is cash on the day we saw it. We have four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a big living room and huge kitchen and dining room. Loads of room. Also, our backyard is approx 45x100ft. and we have it all fenced in so that the cats that were rescued as outdoor cats have a place to go during the day. As I brew my coffee in the morning, I open the back door and six cats go out. Five stay in. The outdoor ones come home for lunch, then again dinner and finally have a 10:00PM curfew. But they are right in the fenced in backyard, hanging out. We put a cat door at the bottom of the garage door so they can hang out in there, too.

We are not affliated with anyone. We just get the ones that are homeless, abused and neglected or sick. We pay from our pocket to get them healthy, fixed and all cats in this house get three vaccinations a year. Between food and toys and etc. and vet bills and flea drops we go for between $275-500 a month on our animals. They will live with us until we can find them homes. But all the ones that no one wants (missing a paw or tail or emotional problems etc) stay here forever. Last year we placed two dogs and about 8 cats. But I will never do dogs again. We have six extra large kitty litters that get scooped twice a day and changed and washed every third day. We vacuum the entire house everyday. We buy three different types of cat food all in 20+ pound bags and mix them up in a 25 gallon tote. We also need canned food for the kittens we presently have and all sorts of toys and treats. The cats here are all spoiled and everyone wants to come back in their next life as a cat in my house.

having an animal is a commitment. A life long commitment. The animals that we place can be here for a matter of weeks or months. One cat was with us for two years until I found the perfect home for her. This is cause we are soooo picky to whom we will give a cat. No matter how long they are here, I am heartbroken every time I say goodbye to one. I love each and every one of them.

If I were to win the lottery, all I want out of the money is a HUGE place so I can let all the animals out of the shelter and give them a home. I am lame, I know. But new cars and fancy clothes dont matter. I love my animals. Giving them away cause they are trouble is something that we would never consider. If I could keep them all forever I would but that is not practical. So, I offer refuge and love until we find them permanent homes. Out of all of them here, there are only four that have been here for over four years and will never leave.
