here in the bay area, ca, it is great white shark season (they congregate off the coast for the next couple months to munch on baby seals). have any of you ever gone shark chumming and if youve done it in california what company did you go with?

I was going to but we didn't make it out of the harbor before being picked up by the harbor patrol for not wearing seatbelts.

apparently false bay in south africa is one of the best places, along with the farallons here in ca, isla guadalupe (sp?) in mexico, and a bay in australia

I've chummed for sharks, never great whites. We just used rotten fish, squid, blood and guts.

There are usually LOTS of great whites out near the Farallon Islands. I used to fish for rock cod and ling cod out there nearly every weekend. It's eerie seeing a "submarine" cruise under your boat...and seeing a fin stick out of the water almost 2 feet...there are some BIG motherfucking sharks out there...

so youve actually seen them? thats way cool. how close do they come. have they ever done the thing where they stick their faces out of the water and look at you, i heard great whites are the only ones that do that

I use my scuba students.

Heh, that's why I always carry a knife with me. If the sharks look like they're hungry I can always slice one or two of the other divers and make my escape. It's like why you always take a fattie with you when camping, you can outrun the fattie and that's your bear protection strategy.

Yup. Same reason I give the students to always dive with a buddy.

No, never had one stick its face out of the water to look at us, but we had a 12 foot mako try to come into the boat one day...that was interesting. That fucking fish was completely out of the water chasing a mackerel that my buddy caught. I had to look UP to see its head..and I was headed for the flying bridge. I didn't want to be standing on the deck if it landed there. :p

Yes, yes I have ... it is a great way to dispose of the dead hookers.
