Have to hit F1 key for it to boot up

System is a windows XP pro has Q6600 cpu motherboard is a MSI P6N SLI Plantinum have 4 gig ram, video card is MSI Geforce NX8600 GT 256 ram.
All of a sudden it stops during the boot and says Hit F1 key to continue nothing else. I hit F1 key and it boots but this is not ever done this before. Bios is American megatrends.

Not sure what to do about this. Is something failing and if so what?

Well i tried disconnecting all USB device except for the mouse and it then boots ok. If i connect one more USB item like a printer its still ok BUT if i connect one more after that device then it stops during boot up and says hit key F1 to resume. It doesnt matter what devices i connect with USB its the number of devices that cause the problem. When this happens I hit the F1 key and it boots and runs normally with all USB devices connected. So its something to do with the amount of USB devices plugged into motherboard. Now i wonder is this is a start of motherboard failure?? BUT why the hit F1 key?

I was considering getting a new motherboard and a solid state hard drive and try running windows 7. I figured in needed a new motherboard to support the faster SATA 2 standard which my current motherboard i dont think supports. Plus iam all out of available SATA connoctors. Only has 4 and mine are all taken. But i wanted to hold off doing this for another 6 months or so. I wonder if i have the time to wait before motherboard fails. That is if thats whats happeing????

I know some motherboards have an option that when you hit a Key combo on the KB it will start the system. There may be some curruption in the CMOS that is causing that to be the dominate power on option. So clear the CMOS and see if that helps.

This sound like it doesn't like the keyboard. It is stupid that when the system doesn't detect a keyboard that is asks you to press F1. But that is what happens on most systems.

Set your BIOS for legacy USB support and set it to not halt on keyboard errors and see what happens.

This is what i think happened as well, resetting the CMOS probably won't fix it as that may have been what caused it.

I tried clearing the cmos and also replaced the battery. That didnt work. I looked in the bios and i cant find anything about keyboard. I have seen this in the past plus two other PC's i have here have it but this one doesnt seem to have a hault on keybopard failure like my two other systems do. But i tried 2 other keyboards from my other systems and it does the same thing.

Its definatly related to the usb devices. If i just leave in the usb mouse it boots fine. I can ad one more usb device whether its my scanner or printer or usb hub, it doesnt matter which one. It boots fine. BUT if I ad one more usb devide (total of 3) again it doesnt matter which one i get, hit the F1 key to resume. Must be somehting failing on the usb controller chip, but why hit F1? Maybe some kind of if something fails it asks for F1 key to be hit? Iam going to email MSI and see if they have any idea.

I now have to debate whether to replace the motherboard or just keep using it until it fails completly. I always back up important files so i wont really lose anything but will be out of a working computer for a while when it fails.

I have a bios made by american megatrends too, the F1 option shows if something fails, like for me I have liquid cooling on my cpu and plugged a light into the PWM connection- so I have to disable the temp/fan readings for that so it doesn't pop up like that.

Thanks for the info. So like i thought something is failing. My guess is something to do with the usb ports/controller chip. Since i can get the F1 key thing to stop if i unplug most of my usb devices. Iam looking into a new motherboard now. I really dont want to have it fail on me completly and be without my main PC for to long a period. I kinda figured this was going to cost me some money. Oh well.
