Have to create and execute a "breaching experiment" for my Communications class

Basically the assignment calls for identifying a social norm and then deliberately breaking it to make others feel uncomfortable. Things like standing about 6 inches away from someone and carrying on a conversation, standing facing the back wall in a crowded elevator, etc. Think everything that Borat did in his movie. 🙂

Anyone have any ideas of things? My partner and I were thinking about going into a McDonalds and then getting into a shouting match with one another or trying to ask the cashier something personal. Thing is, I don't want to tick anyone off or cause a hassle for someone just trying to do his/her job.

Instead of holding the door open for someone, intentionally pull it closed behind you as you enter/leave a place.

Stand next to two people talking that you don't know and listen in obviously.

Another good one... yesterday my japanese instructor heard her cell phone going off in her purse. So she pulled it out and put it on the desk, thereby increasing the ring volume, but never answered it.

My friend had to do an assignment like that. She wrote out a grocery list (just as a prop) and went to the supermarket, and while pushing a shopping cart around she would randomly stop and take an item out of another shopper's cart while they could see her, put it in her own cart, then cross an item off the list.

Reactions ranged from "Hey, what the hell are you doing" to "Excuse me, miss, but that item was in my shopping cart." to silence with a look of disbelief and everything in between. She had a lot of fun doing it.

As a male, carry a small dog around, paris hilton style.

Go to a bookstore, and just start reading over people's shoulders without ever speaking to them or acknowledging their presence.

Blurt out random words every few minutes.

Pick your nose constantly.

Lick your arm like a lollipop.

Lotsa stuff.

that would be hilarious!

we did an experiment using pg-13 words in a public place to see the different reactions at different volumes. it was pretty funny. nipple had the largest response at normal talking volume. it even scored better than sex at a high volume.

Face backwards in a crowded elevator and just stare straight ahead. I've done this. It works REALLY surprisingly well if your goal is to freak people out.

Both of you stand in an open area and look up. See how many people look up to see what you're looking at.

Or do the Dane Cook bit:
Go to fast food restaurant. Walk up to cashier and think for a bit. Then point (you have to point) at the overhead menu and ask for something NOT on the menu (e.g. at MacDonald's ask for a spaghetti bowl).

Cashier reactions:
a. turns around to look at menu
b. tell you that's not on the menu
c. search for it on the register

BTW, definitely film some of it and post on YouTube for ATOT viewing pleasure.

Unfortunately there's legality issues with that, BUT pictures should be OK if I blur their faces. 🙂

I really like these ideas guys. Grocery cart one sounds amazing and so does the Dane Cook bit. Keep 'em coming!

Ask someone to take your picture and hand them a disposable camera. When they take the camera, walk over to your spot and start taking off your shirt.

EDIT: or even better. Pose for the picture with a blow up doll you have stashed around the corner and tell him you want a picture with your girlfriend.

thought u were talking about military breaching... as in armed assault in a secured hostile area.

talk LOUDLY about wanting to have sex w/your mom/sister/dad/brother/dog/horse

Get into an elevator and stare at people. Sit directly next to someone who is far away from everyone else- as close possible.
