Hmm... well, if Abraham Lincoln was an atheist... Thomas Jefferson was thought to be an atheist in his day. I don't know about Lincoln though...

Try Google.

I just did a Google search for "athiest president" and here's the first find:
Star Jones says no to Atheist president
I thought it was funny
I bet she never said no to a plate full of food!

Oh if Star Jones says its bad it must be

I have seen her on TV, what a idiot.

Star Jones is a stupid, fat, ugly bitch. I can't stand her in that damn show. She just seems like an idiot. Plus she thinks she looks good. Maybe she should stand on a scale once in a while.

I think it's unlikely that a publicly admitted atheist would get elected to the office of President in the modern era; such a belief would simply give too much political ammunition to the other political party. I can, however, picture Clinton being an athiest at heart, but assuming the trappings of some random sect of Christianity for appearances. This is preferable to someone like Bush, who quotes Scripture, pushes a "faith-based" school initiative, and wouldn't mind banning all forms of human cloning and stem-cell research, even that which promises to someday be of great benefit to mankind.

I remember hearing that 95% of Americans believe in some form of a deity.

So atheists aren't a big portion of the population - so there's a better chance a religious person would be elected.

"i hope so i am tired of having WASPs in office."

Hmm, let's see, Kennedy was Catholic. I'm sure there were others, but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I think the 5% of atheists populate this forum.

perhaps they are more vocal when it can't be held against them.

I remember hearing somewhere that Teddy Roosevelt was quite the secular humanist. He may not have been an atheist per se, but I think he was close....

Jefferson was not an Athiest, he was a Diest. He believed in God but believed more in common sense/science. Doesn't mean he was an athiest. He though there was a higher being/
