Have RAM prices bottomed out?

Hey all, just wondering if anyone can remember a time in the past 2-3 years when RAM was cheaper? I see the cheapest 2x8GB kit as $52.99 on newegg. It's safe to say it has bottomed out yea? I'm reading analysts are expecting RAM prices to go up this year, but certainly haven't seen that reflected in the market.

They appear to be stable for about the last month.

No, they have not been lower in the several years.

Let's say they continue to drop though. How long do you want to wait to save $5?

oh, it's not to save $5, i'm quite happy with my 16GB. It's just to see the state of the RAM market. Micron stocks plunged today on weak earnings and i'm just curious to see if this turn around in RAM prices is happening anytime soon.

I predict DDR4 is at a bottom. DDR3 will stay cheap for a few more months, then steadily go up in price as supply dries up next year.

I bought a couple of G.Skill 2x8 GB kits April 29th for $49. They are now selling for $59. Looks to me like it is going up already. All of the kits I was considering at the time have gone up about $10. That may not sound like much, but it is 20%.

I think you already missed the bottom.

Here was my bottom.

I had 2x Rainbow Six Siege coupon codes (bundled with the memory kits at the time) I sold for around $70 (after fees etc.) on Amazon + Amex reward coupon I had clipped for $10 off $100 online purchase at Newegg.com. Anyway, I ended up with 4x8GB HyperX Fury DDR4 2666 RAM for about $80 after it was all said and done back in February. Those are currently retailing for $85.99 for 2x8GB today.

It probably has unless Samsung, Micron, Hynix, and Infineon decide to get together and have a few beers over business discussions. ;)

I picked up three V-Color 2x8GB DDR3-1866 1.5V kits for $44.99 only a few weeks ago.

But that may have been because Newegg was fire-saleing them, because they're no longer going to carry them.

I have noticed that recently, the usual GSkill kits for 2x8GB have been trending for more than $49.99, which is probably as low as they were going.

So yeah, I think that DDR3 has mostly bottomed-out, for "name-brand" kit.

Still, a lot better than the $95 I spent on some GSkill 2x8GB kits a year or two ago.

RAM manufacturers aren't stupid. If anything they are already ramping down DDR3/DDR4 production in response to the rapid PC sales decline, and there is a lag time before the supply drop hits retail pricing, as PC sales fall is an immediate demand effect on RAM while the RAM supply cut on retail prices is a delayed one as lower demand = more time needed needed to burn through the existing RAM inventory.

We are now probably in the tail end of it if you ask me.

I think Samsung is the 500lbs gorilla that decides everything as their capacity far outweighs the others. The others just shuffle along with what Samsung decides.:p

Thanks for the info! So they are slowly creeping up...

The long term direction will still be cheaper (and not to mention faster and denser), so don't just buy because of fears of a price hike if you really don't need. Many have made that mistake before.

Bought some 16GB G.skill 2400 for the the parents pc was around 61 euro , today 74:eek: , was a mini spike in DDR4 - 2133Mhz/2400 prices.

Bought myself 32GB 4*8 of crucial 2400-16-16-16-40 for my new build in the next 2 months for 109 euro , I wouldn't be surprised we reached bottom on DDR4 2133-2400MHZ because :
-AMD is switching to DDR4
-Intel kabylake last platform to be using DDR3/DDR4 and seams the big OEM are slowing going to only DDR4 solutions.
-Mobile devices are slowly adopting DDR4.

So I have a feeling that we are close to the turning point were DDR4 will become the standard design over DDR3.

There still some nice deals ± 3/euro per GB or even below it to be made but in general don't think mainstream it will drop below 3 Euro per GB.

I might see > 2400 DDR4 enthusiastic to still be dropping a bit or see good deals there.

I wanted to pick up 4x 16gb ECC sodimms for my laptop that I run a ton of virtual machines so I actually need that much ram. It's pretty low for 64gb of ram but my laptop isn't coming for another month. Wondering if I should buy now or wait. It's cheaper but not that cheaper right now.

I was tired of being on 8gb of ram so I upgraded to 2x8gb 16gb ddr3 2400mhz corsair vengeances. They were on sale for a pretty good deal, now there 10 bucks more. Normal resting price is usually around 72-75 for them.

I'm loving the difference between 8gigs and 16. It's 100% noticeable for what I do pc wise. Wish I would have done it awhile ago.

I'm sure it was, and this thread inclines me to remind everyone that RAM will definitely get cheaper over time. What you pay for 8GB today, you'll be able to get 16GB for at some point, and 32GB at some later point.
