Have police created a new radar system...?

Last I checked, cops only used K and most often Ka band radar to detect speeders. I have heard about "snap on" radar where it's only detectable by other people once the cars are close enough together.

On a related note, I got pulled over this morning for, "doing 57 in a 45" even though:
A) I have a radar detector, and at no time did it go off
B) I was doing probably 50-52

Luckily, I only got a warning. Probably because it was my first time ever being stopped in that town and because he knew damn well he didn't have me on radar doing that speed.

If I did actually get the ticket...Would I be able to ask him right on the spot to produce the evidence showing I was doing that speed? Or would I just wait until court and ask him to produce the evidence? Or is this one of those cases where cops are just allowed to eye-ball your speed (which is total BS I think)?

1)Nope. My radar detector also detects laser. It's a laser/radar combo I suppose. And I know that function works because I was lasered a week ago by a state trooper.

2) Usually when cops are doing laser, they have it up to their eye and "point" it at you. This guy was just chilling in his car looking straight ahead.

Also, I've never ever seen a local cop use laser. Generally only troopers use it on the highway.

Outside of radar/laser the only other ways I know of is pacing and timing.

Timing is done with a video camera across 2 known points. Pacing is self explaining.🙂

Timing will hold up in at least one county court in GA. Although pacing requires a video camera also.

Court, and if they like him or are in-bed with the city then they will dismiss your argument regardless of... anything. You'd need irrefutable proof that you were innocent and even that would likely require suing them after they burn you at the original court.

</Cynical expectations>

i am not the biggest aclu fan (i dont like how they're for disarming the individual) but here is something from:
flex your rights

and dont forget that the local cops are being more and more militarized by the day, so it is quite likely they are doing things they havent done before.

What detector do you have? Not all radar detectors are created equal.

Cobra. Don't remember the exact model #. It's about 4 years old now. Detects X, K, Ka, laser and S band (or something similar) which is generally only used by fire trucks and ambulances when they are running to an emergency.

That's a low end detector and most likely can't pick up Instant On. It's just not fast enough. A Redline with the latest firmware and custom settings would most likely of picked it up a mile out.

I don't see what stops a prick cop from lying and saying he got you with radar when really he just noticed you were "going to fast".

$500 for a radar detector, wow... I mean, after a few would be tickets, it pays for itself I suppose. I think my cobra was like $150.. so that's obviously cheap. It actually has detected instant on before, I noticed a cop was coming with a Ka signal of like 1, then as he got nice and close, it snapped right up to 5.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this guy didn't have me on radar because I saw him and looked down and saw I was doing about 52. I know I was not over the 55mph tick.

Can they angle their radar guns to turn almost 90 degrees? Because his car was perpendicular to the road I was traveling down.

He might have been practicing calculation of speed via stop watch, but that would be giving him too much credit. If he was, quite the failure.

Sounds like the cop didn't have you on radar. Stopped you to see if you would admit to going at some made up speed. If you did, easy ticket, you'd pay without going to court. If you didn't give him the speed he was asking for or said "I don't know." Then it would make for a much harder ticket/court case, and that is why he left you with a warning.

In other words, he was revenue building and trying to get some easy pickins.

He never asked me the "how fast were you going thing?", he actually said, "So, you in a hurry this morning?", to which I said, "No sir, just on my way to work."

He then said something like, "Alright well I got you doing 57 in a 45." to which I replied, "Oh.. Okay."

Nothing new that I know of. Cheap detectors completely defeat the purpose of owning one. I have an Escort 8500 x50 which is a little old by now but I think still gets the job done.

Doesn't matter what you have if you get shot with laser you will be caught regardless. Your detector will light up like a christmas tree, but its still too late.

He probably would have asked you if you said you were in a hurry. But you said no... He was leading up to it. Like I said, easy pickings. He wants you to admit to it before he says anything.

Usually when I'm pulled over for speed, this is how it goes: "Do you know why I stopped you?" "No" "How fast do you think you were going?" They always ask me first what my speed is before ever telling me what they clocked me at. I've only been pulled over maybe 2-3 times in my life and it's always been the same way.

Meh, I don't know if responding with "okay" is actually an affirmative.. I suppose it is technically. I should have said, "I see" instead. Oh well, whatever.. Looks like I need a new radar detector. That Redline looks awesome, but for $500.. that'll take me a while to save up for.
