If you are OK with being forced to use itunes (or an unsupported alternative), go right ahead. my problem with ipods isn't with the hardware, but the limitations that apple has impose3d on it. don't even get me started on their damn m4a format.

I'd suggest the creative zen micro, or the iaudio. too bad samsung isn't bigger in the North american MP# player market

Because iPods can only use m4a files....

derrrr, i never said that. I just hate their tactic of getting people to use itunes, then selling them music through it. Most consumers are gullible enough to buy it, and not smart enough to realize they can only play them on ipods or their computer.
I think it's just kind of lame. Not to say you couldn't get around it, it's just annoying and i don't feel like supporting companies that use those kinds of practices.

JVC XA-HD500

Now, JVC might not be teh sexiest company at the moment, but it has a remote (Infra red remote, not a wired one!), looks nice, small enough, and should have the flat out best sound quality of any portable player.

Sample review

I'm definitely getting one, only problem is finding a retailer.

Consider the Rio Carbon - I've had one for a year.. it's small, got great battery life (I get about 18 hours). It looks pretty cool too. Though... the Zen Micro with the OLED screen is also pretty neat.

What else would you play them on?

I like my zen micro, course I think with creative losing money they need to open up their firmware so people can do stuff with them. Don't get me wrong I like the interface more than ipods (stfw about their wheel) but there's so much more that can be done. So stopping before I get into a rant, I did have a problem with my headphone jack a couple of months ago, sent it in and they fixed it for free. Unfortunately, my warranty is going to end soon (it's one year) so if it dies again I'll need to crack it open and fix it myself. However, I do believe they started phasing in a different jack setup; don't quote me on that.

I'm going to have to refer you to this thread in Peripherals.

The CNET review is the only one I've read so far and I am really taking a hard look at the e270.
6GB flash, 20 hr battery life, user replaceable battery: good stuff
I think it is hitting stores right about ... now.

I have the Iaudio X5L and absolutely love it!

Previously I had a Rio Karma which I really liked but it is notorious for being unreliable and sure enough iit died on me. Since they didn't manufacture them anymore, I got an iPod Nano, which is a decent player but I wasn't that thrilled with it because of the lack of customizability. The Nano is basically idiot proof. Also, with the equalizer settings turned up, I got some harmonic distortion with some songs. One of the biggest negatives was the sensitivity of the player. Sometimes I wanted to only turn up or down the volume a notch because some songs weren't recorded at consistent volumes. It was really hard to do without taking it out of my pocket and gently adjusting it. Also, I found no way of turning the Nano off. Whenever I left it around over the weekend, on Monday, the battery would be dead. I must have been missing something.

With the X5, all I was looking for was a good sounding MP3 player. I don't really need or care for the video. I don't really care about size since it'll be in a jack pocket or my bag. As an MP3 player, I don't think the X5 has a peer. The BBE combined with Machbass , user adjustable equalizer and MP3 enhance mode makes it sound unbelievable. If you are really into bass, I don't think the X5 is rivaled. In fact, I have Machbass set only at 7 because its too bassy. On top of that, even maxed out, the bass does not get distorted which is incredible. I got the L version which makes it a bit bulky but it has 35 hours of play time so it more than offset the size factor for me.

Anyway, if you are looking purely at sound quality, I'd wholeheartedly recommend the X5.

The corporation was never meant to be a benevolent entity. Just out of curiosity what other companies do you boycott for unfair business practices?

I bet you're typing this out on a PC

This looks like a good player. However, kinda expensive isn't it? I thought flash-based players are suppose to be cheaper. Maybe it'll come down during Memorial Day.
