Have modem/router>switch>2 W7 boxes: How to share?

I have a D-Link 2540U modem/router>Crossover Cable>TP-Link TL SF1005DSwitch (5 port)>2xStreight cables>2x Windows 7 computers.

Both computers connect just fine to the internet, but when I try to connect either of the computers as the second connection, I get the ISP password page, and the connection fails. I can't figure out how to get into the router's utility to configure it. It says to use my browser and go to the IP address, but that always times out.

I know I shouldn't have to put in the ISP password for the second connection, since the router is already connected, but I can't figure out how to configure the router so multiple connections work.

It is not clear from your post waht the second connetion is?

Sharing between two Win 7 computers works this way.

Win7 when configured on peer-to-peer Network has three types of Sharing configurations.

HomeGroup Network = Works only between Win 7 computers. This type of configuration makes it very easy to Entry Level Users to start Network sharing.

Work Network = Basically similar to the previous methods of sharing that let you control what, how, and to whom folders would be shared with.

Public Sharing
= Public Network (like Internet cafe) to reduce security risks.

For best results log to each computer's System Screen and set all the computers to be on a Network with the same name while each computer has its own unique name.
http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/net_name.jpg

Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party Firewall instructions

General example, http://www.ezlan.net/faq#trusted

Please Note that some 3rd party Software Firewalls keep blocking aspects of Local Traffic even it they are turned Off (disabled). If possible configure the Firewall correctly, or totally uninstall it to allow clean flow of local network traffic. If the 3rd party software is uninstalled or disables, make sure that Windows native Firewall is On .
------------------------------
If your network is comprised of Win 7 only and you want a simple Network, use this.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/videos/sharing-files-with-homegroup

After configuring the Homegroup scroll down to the Permission/Security section.
-----------------------------
Networking Win 7 with other version of Windows as Work Network.
In the Network Center, clicking on the Network type opens the window to the right.
Choose your type of Network. Notice the check mark at the bottom, and check/uncheck it according to your needs.

When finished with the setting of the system it is advisable to Reboot all the hardware including the Router and all computers involved.
-------------
If needed check specifically the settings.
Point to the a Folder that meant to to be share. Right click and choose properties.
In the properties
Click on the Security tab shown in the pic bellow to the right) and check that the users and their permission (shown in the pic bellow center and left) are correctly configured. Then do the same to the Permission tab.
This screen shot is from Win 7, Vista's menus are similar.
http://www.ezlan.net/Win7/Permission-Security.jpg
In both the Security panel, and the Permission panel you have to highlight each User/Group and examine that the Permission Controls are checked correctly.

When everything is OK, Reboot the Network (Router, and computer).

* Note
. The Groups and Users shown in the screen-shoot are just an example. Your list will look the way your system is configured.

**Note
. You have to establish specific users. Everyone means all of the users that already have an account and been established as users. It does not mean Everyone that feel that they would like to login.

---------------------
***Note. Some of the processes described above are done Not for Windows sake but to compensate for different Routers and the way their firmware works and stores the info about the computers that are Networked.

I'm fairly new to networking, but I don't understand what a second connection is. I was under the assumption that I needed one connection to an internet service provider, and that with a router and switch I could connect multiple computers to the same ISP at the same time. If this is true, than I don't understand what you mean by a second connection.

I was hoping to avoid using the Home Group with Windows 7, since I tried for a couple weeks to get that going with only limited success. I couldn't figure out how to get my firewall (PC Tools) to allow all the trusted computer's communications. The only way I could get it to work at all was to turn off my protection, and even then, I couldn't get the second computer to connect to the internet. Windows had the connection labeled "unidentified", and I couldn't so much as change the name on it. I was hoping to avoid all this by just using a router.

I don't need the computers to talk to each other- though that would be very nice- I really just need to be able to use the internet with each one.

Perhaps I will need to revisit trying to connect the computers together with a Home Group, but it was so frusterating since this suposably simple task was not accomplished after two weeks of Googling for possible answers.

That router has 4 LAN ports on it. Take the switch out and plug both the computers directly into the the ports on the router itself and see what happens. With both computers plugged in, open a command prompt on each computers and issue this command and post the results: ipconfig /all

How is the modem configured. Do you have user credentials saved on the modem, so that it presents an always-on ethernet connection to the internet, or do you have to run dialer or connection software on the PC? Generally speaking, if the modem is in bridge mode, then if you have the router's WAN port connected to the modem, then you configure the router to login and establish the connection for you. Then the router presents an always-on ethernet connection to the internet on the LAN ports of the router.

Originally I was connected just to the router, but I had this switch, so I installed it to see if it would make a difference.

So now I have removed the switch, and am back to just the router. Both computer 1 and computer 2 connect to the internet, as long as either is first to log on. If the other computer tries to log on, the connected one looses the connection, and the other fails to connect. Following is the info from the command console with both computers 1 and 2 physically connected to router. I don't know what you need so I'm including all info in this order:
1- Computer 1 with neither computer logged onto the ISP
2- Computer 1 with #1 connected to internet
3- Computer 2 with neither computer logged onto the ISP
4- Computer 2 with #2 connected to internet

1- Computer 1 with neither computer logged onto the ISP:

Then the router presents an always-on ethernet connection to the internet on the LAN ports of the router.

Yes, this sounds like what I need to figure out how to do.

Truthfully, I don't know how the modem/router is configured, and I don't think any user credentials are saved on it. I got it new, and just now figured out how to get into it. With the switch connected, I was unable to enter the router configuration utility, but now that I have removed the switch, I find that I can get inside the router. I just don't know what to do here now that I'm here.

I will have to go over the router instructions more, now that I can get inside.

You're looking for the option to setup your WAN connection. Enter the PPP credentials there, usually a username/password. Based on your IP config outputs, this appears to be part of the problem.

You r all topology is strange.

The first part above seems to work with the Router.

IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.2(Preferred)

The rest do not.

Every time you have an IP like this IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 95.133.162.129(Preferred)

It menas thta the computer is connected directly to the Interent and thus ther is No sharing.

All you computers IPs have to be IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.x

------------------

My guess would be that your Router does not authenticate the PPPOE and you have some sort of Junky PPPOE management utility on your computers. It got there probably when the useless ISP CD was used.

Thanks guys, here is where I'm at.

The manual for my router starts out showing the configuration utility that I have, but then it suddenly starts refering to a “Quick Setup” option- which I don't have. I thought that I might be able to update the router software to get the Quick Setup, but at the D-Link website, they don't show the U model- only the 2540B. I downloaded the software for the B, but there's no readme or any documentation I can find, so I'm hesitant to install it. It looks like I'm stuck with “Advanced Setup”, but Wow! There are so many variables, I hardly know where to start.

To make matters worse, I can't figure out how to do it post images or screen shots here. My posting rules say: “You may not post attachments”.

In the Advanced Setup menu is the WAN menu. Under WAN, I have 3 entries- each of which can be removed or edited. I don't know why there are three entries. I thought it might be because I had 3 computers attached, but I disconnected all but one, rebooted the router, and there was no change.

Two of the WAN entries are PPPoE, and the third is Bridge. Each of the PPPoE entries have my username, and password.

Also under Advanced Setup is a PPTP menu. It has a place for username and password, and it was disabled by default. I enabled it, put in my data, and rebooted, but there was no change.

I'm pretty sure my router is not signing into the ISP, and only the computer is doing it. If I assign a static IP address (192.168.1.x) to the computer's connection (Connect to>right click the connection>Properties>Networking tab>IPv4>Properties) I get an error till I change it back to obtain address automatically.

From JackMDS's link: PPPoE

“Once you have an account and password connect... In the PPPOE menu type Username and Password, make sure that the PPPOE option is checked. Set the Router to obtain IP automatically. If there is an entry for idle time put it on always or maximum time.”

I don't have a PPPoE menu. In the WAN menu, under “connection type”, PPPoE is selected, and my username and password is entered. I don't see a place in the router to obtain the IP automatically. Under: DNS menu I checked “Enable Automatic Assigned DNS” and under: Routing>Default Gateway: “Enable Automatic Assigned Default Gateway” is checked.

I deleted all network connections on computer #1, and connected only it to the router. I can access the router setup utility- but not the internet. Clicking on the big red X in the Network and Sharing Center brings up a troubleshooter which concludes that my router isn't connected to the access point. Still in the Network and Sharing Center, I click: Set up a new connection>Set up a new network (Configure a new router or access point) The next window says it could take up to 90 seconds to my hardware to show up, but after 10 minutes there is no change. To reestablish a link to the internet, I have to choose Connect to the Internet, and enter my ISP username and pass.

ftp://ftp.dlinktech.co.za/support/dsl2540u/dsl-2540u_manual.pdfWhat color is your "Internet" light when attempting to connect?

Actually, while that is the same model number as my modem, it's not quite the same. Mine only has green lights, and the case is a little different also.
This is the one I have.

I'm pretty sure I'm just passing through the router, and it doesn't have a connection on it's own, since the Internet LED never lights up, even when I'm online.

You use a straight cable, not a crossover cable between the router and switch. :)

OK, so I fiddled with the router settings, and I'm not actually sure what I did, but I got the internet light to come on, so now the router is connected. I deleted the network connection from computer 1, and was able to connect to the internet directly through what W7 calls "Network 2".

I connected computer 2, and again, what W7 calls "Network 2", has internet access.

Thanks all!
