Have Linksys BEFW11S4 version 2..getting confused on how to setup static IP with 2 PC.

Hey as the subject...i have a linksys BEFW11S4 v.2 wireless router..and i cannot setup a static ip on this router for two machines.

the reason i am doing this is b/c sometimes one of my computers does not get DHCP ip from the server and its configurs itself as automation config that on 162.x.x.x address. which is basically a internal address..so if u try to renew the that ip using ipconfig /release then /renew nothing changes..so my pc gets stucked without internet.

anywhoo..thats is the reason i want to setup my computer to static ip..cause if the router supplies a static ip i would configure the computer on a manual connection and i know that only the ip on the router would change..and everything else would be the same...hence my computer would not use DHCP and then in theory not lose internet connection in a middle of something..

SO with all this said..does anyone know the steps u take to enable staitc ip on this router? cause i tried looking it up in the manual..and it did not work for me..i had to go back to the default settings to make it work again.

Not sure I understand. I *assume* you want to setup your computers to use a static IP, not the router right? If your ISP doesn't provide you with a static IP then you can't use a static IP on the router.

I'm going to assume that you have no problems with the router getting an IP and communicating properly with your modem, and that you have one computer that for whatever reason doesn't properly detect DHCP and get assigned an IP address by the router.

First of all, be aware that DHCP is pretty goof proof nowadays. If your computer isn't getting an IP assinged there might be something wrong (interference if it's a wireless connection, a bad cable if it's hardwired, maybe your drivers need to be updated or the NIC needs a BIOS update, maybe you have an IRQ conflict with your NIC).

Setting up the IP manually on that computer may solve your problem however, and it's the logical thing to try assuming you believe your hardware is okay.

There's really nothing to this - you don't need to change anything on the router. You can leave DHCP enabled for the benefit of other computers that don't have a problem with it. The only thing you need to do is check the router's menu to see what IP addresses it will auto-assign so you can avoid them. I think Linksys assigns 192.168.1.100 through 200 so (for instance) 192.168.1.99 would be safe.

On the system you want to setup manually go into the TCP/IP settings for the network device connected to the network and manually set the IP, the DNS and the Gateway. As I said above, use an IP that's outside the range that the router will auto-assign. The Gateway address is the address of the router (usually 192.168.1.1 for Linksys) and the DNS numbers will be the ones provided by the ISP. If you don't know them you can see what they are in the router's Status menu or by checking IPCONFIG (or WinIPCfg if it's a Win9x system) on the other computer.

Hope this helps....

hey flyingpenguin thanks for all your help... i did exactly what u did like an hour after i posted this message. the thing that i did not do (which was very bonehead if i think about it) is that in the TCP/IP settings on the computers i did give the all the static information like the IP i want them to have and the gateway and subnet mask...but silly of me i left the DNS server blank....

so no wonder i was not surfing anything. i was just not getting any name address allocation..hehe

anywhoo..now the problems solved..thanks for ur help... 😱
