Have laptop makers ruined touchpads?

I'm not sure what you mean by "ruined." Touchpads have always been mediocre at best.

Touchpads on new laptops suck balls. The older ones (6 to 7 years ago and beyond) were so much better.

Working in industrial environments dragging a laptop around equipment requires a touchpad. My old Dell D830 works wonders compared to the new crap. Even the new Dell Precision laptops have crappy touchpads in comparison.
