please can someone give me some reassurance or tell me what i can do

i have had trouble building my new pc and discovered that my cpu wasnt seated correctly, each time i tried to boot and nothing happened i switched the pc straight off. now that ive got it working i managed to get into the bios.
i was just reading thru the different options that i had and after about 2 mins of the pc being on i went to the "pc health check" and saw that my cpu was running at 75->165 temp, it then froze as i tried to quit the bios, i hadnt changed any of the settings and the bios was set at default so fsb was 8*100

please can any one tell me the good or bad news

P4's can't be cooked according to the review sites that investigated the thermal protection properties of modern processors.

Your CPU is not dead. Have you tried to restart the PC yet? Did you properly install the HSF or did it come with the CPU? I doubt your CPU is dead.

thanks for the reply that was the warning temp i saw (feels extremly stupid) but the temp is still 57 which still seems quite hot is this normal

Ignore MB readings, turn PC off and touch CPU, it is probably cold.
It is common problem for P4 MBs

i highly doubt its fried...the other day i removed my hsf from my cpu and reinstalled it without cleaning and applying a new layer or as3...big no no...and it ran fine, i could actually hear the cpu throttling down and when i checked my temps...they were actual;y lower before 🙂 nice thermal protection intel!!!

yeah i dont know much about intel...i use amd's, but as far as i know, intel = god when it comes to thermal protection. i am very impressed lately with intel, as everyone else should be. i have 1 thing to say... p4 1.6a! WOW

Is the fan working correctly? If so, it is difficult that the CPU had fried, even more
considering the built-in thermal protection of Intels. But one thing I ask myself: this
thermal protection depends on the mobo. If the mobo is not working correctly,
maybe the thermal protection doesn´t work? I don´t know the answer.

Anyway, try to touch the heatsink to see if it is hot when running.

Also try to clear the CMOS, who knows, 🙂

HenHowC - How can you possibly "hear" your CPU "throttling down"? Do you mean the CPU Fan actually slows down?

I hear when my current rig is going from load to no load and vice-versa. But I kinda think I am hearing my Enermax's fan changing speeds. Don't think you can actually hear you processor, if you do hear your processor then ask it the winning lottery numbers......😀 J/K

you can hear your CPU proccessing through your loudspeakers, rising the volume
but not the lottery numbers, sadly, hehe
