Have I damaged my CPU : 6300 with bad HSF mount

Hello,

I just built a new machine with E6300.
The stock heatsink was mounted incorrectly.
When I checked the temperatur using core temp, it showed 70C for both the cores.
I immediately shut the machine down.
There is no overclocking done.
The whole operation took abt 5 minutes.

I have remounted the heatsink and the fan is rotating at full speed.
The temps are now at 42C idle and 58C load ( I know it is still high for 6300 )

Have I damaged the CPU as the heatsink was not mounted properly.
I am worried, please help.

if it works, i guess it's alright :) otherwise it simply wouldn't work.. try running some tests, compare results to same processor on different machine..

There is no reason to worry because

1) those chips can handle 70C, thottling will kick in however to prevent the temperature from rising further
2) if they get too hot (75C or so not sure exactly) they shut down before it gets dangerous
3) 5 minutes doesnt matter at all some people run pentiums at a constant 70C with throttling always active they just dont know it.

I mounted my HSF incorrectly on one of my rigs once, temp shot up up and scared the heck out of me.

Don't do that anymore. Well, first time for anyone, eh?

It's a great feeling when things work!
You got lucky and may the force be with you, grasshopper.:)

hehe, I'm actually running @ 3.5GHz now :p Almost 9hrs Orthos small FFT's 3.5GHz

Well, I would say have good RAM for one. I'm not saying you don't, but after seeing what Team Group can do over at XS, I had to have them. Another thing, disable things in the BIOS like "static read control", "spread spectrum". I was getting errors with Orthos blend when I had static read control enabled. Use voltage increases one step at a time. I noticed that Orthos may fail within 30 minutes, but if I upped the vcore 1 notch, it does fine. Some may get afraid of the temp I have had, But its nothing to worry about as I said before. Most systems will not get that high with normal apps.

In the end its trial and error bro, step by step, gotta crawl before you walk ;) The truth though, its a crap shoot, you have atleast 3 things that can limit you, CPU/RAM/Motherboard. If you have 2 of the 3, you still might not get what you want. Good luck in achieving that which you desire :)

imho i will settle for 3.3... 100 mhz will not change my life as going from 2.4 is is big increase... and at 3.3 it's stable, silent and pretty much cool on load at 55 degress... going to 3.4 requires cpu pumping up voltage even higher, temps go to about 60-62 degress.. and saving 2 minutes of rendering... ah.. fu.. it :)
