Have/are you ever been "Depressed" medically?

I think in a sense once in a while we are all depressed. It's just some of us deal with the depression more successfully than others and that's why we think that we never had one. Since most of us have gone though the age of maturity and self-realization, i think we all were depressed once a upon a time only beacuse we realized that life wasn't what we thought it was. Life is a mindless void waiting for us to fill it with meaning and vigor.😉

Nope.. And completely medication-free here.

is that something to be proud of? being med free, i mean?

Well, these days it's almost unusual. Seems like most people I know are on some flavor of anti-depressant medication.

I said to my Psychiatrist, "Doctor, Everyone hates me".

He says, "Don't be silly, everyone hasn't met you yet".

I have a family history of depression/anxiety. I am currently being treated with Paxil, and have been the last 6 months or so. It really changed my life for the better. I'm 28 and had never taken anything until this year, and can't believe I had such negative feelings about being "medicated".

About the teen suicide thing, here is WHY: You have a depressed person who doesn't have any energy and is a person who would likely kill themself. They take antidepressants, and are now able to get up and out and do things. Now that they have the will and the BOOST to take action, they kill themselves. Again, just one person's opinion (mine).

I am not as opposed to medication now that I've seen how much better I have felt being on Paxil. There have been a few side effects (can't ejaculate sometimes?) but none that would stop me from taking it.

my dads side of the family has a history of depression. i was diagnosed with deppresion, took medications, then decided i didnt need them anymore. after i stopped taking the meds, i did feel depressed every once in a while, but nowhere near as much as before my meds.

There have also been other personal struggles, including depression.

"I was on Prozac for a long time. It may have helped me out of a jam for a little bit, but people stay on it forever. I had to get off at a certain point because I realized that, you know, everything's just OK," says Carrey.

trust me it's debilitating in the extreme. it's almost impossible to shake on your own. it's also been a huge source of my poetry.

I'd be interested to know what the breakdown is by political orientation.

I've never seen so many pessimistic, "half-empty", sky is falling, gloom and doom, hand-wringing, winers as I have at P&N.

I think if you have medical coverage in America you are more likely to be labled as depressed if not they just say you are unhappy.

agreed. it used to be the doc would tell you things are just rough, ride it out, and theyll get better. now its just an instant prescription. gotta love the economics of heath care.

some people truly need it, such as chemical imbalances, terminal illness, etc. i dont think anyone should be prescribed them until testing has proved they medically need it by a specialist, not just joe blow m.d. the family practitioner thats pumping out 12 patients an hour so he can get his kick-back vacation from the drug companies.

Perhaps you would also like to know their religious affiliation while you're at it? 😛

I *might* be wrong, but I believe he is manic/depressive, a.k.a. Bipolar

As for myself, yes, I have. I get a serious case of SAD most years durring winter, and last year I was actually diagnosed with depression. Tried medication, but it made me even sicker, so I quit taking it. I'm doing much better than I was a year ago, but I still don't think I'm completely over it, and sometimes it doesn't take a whole lot to start me sliding back down the hill - for a little while at least.

More than half here are depressed? Wow.

Rest for the Weary (Matthew 11:27-29)

At that time Jesus said, ?I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.

?All things have been committed to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.

?Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.?

Amen.

do you look down on those who do take anti-depresant medication?

I don't look down on people who take medication, but I believe that almost all depression CAN be dealt with with sheer willpower.

It's TIRING and takes a few lucky mental breakthroughs though. Medication is certainly easier!

Agreed. If your body is lacking the exposure to sunlight, such a box should be considered. I've read many positive aspects of using such a box. Plus, you can use it while sitting at your computer or studying at your desk.

My general care physician up and prescribed me Prozac because my mother thought I had very bad depression. He also thought it would help with migraines. Well, he was wrong on both accounts, as I'm not, have not been depressed since I was 11. The Prozac didn't help any either.

You were depressed at 11? That's sad.
