I recall reading that there might have been even greater loss of life at the hands of Cally's squad if it hadn't of been for a Helicopter gunship crew that positioned themselves between Calley's men and civilians and forced Calley's men to stand down by training their ships cannon or machinegun on them threatening to open fire if they (Calley's men) continued.
