Well, there are more phases, but I'll try to simplistically put it into an analogy for you:
"going out" is akin to being in the batter's box. here's your chance to see if you can get a hit and reach first base safely. It may take a few at-bats to reach base....but if you think she is unhittable, take your cuts elsewhere.
"seeing" a girl is you've made it to base safely, and are trying to round the bases. This is where most relationships are made or broken. If you can't follow up your initial hit with some production, you're gonna be back on the bench.
"dating" a girl is when you've rounded the bases and you're about to score. You need to come through in the clutch and punch that run in and score. This can be very difficult if the girl is pitching a "No-No". Many men have been stranded at third base. You're close enough to steal home and score, but sometimes it wasn't meant to be
"girlfriend" you've either knocked it out of the yard or you did it the hard way and manufactured a score, but either way you're home. Now you just keep trying to score until the game is over (you either get married or you break up
