have a toothache

I've never had one until today, it just came out of nowhere. I was even eating ice cream last night with no issues. The pain took my by surprise and was very intense, so I swished with warm water and salt and I don't feel it now. But I'm guessing that won't last too long. I'm not going to be able to get to a dentist for about a week or more to get it looked at and taken care of. I have no insurance and I'm sure it won't be cheap *DOH* I Googled Orajel and Ambesol and the people are saying they really don't do much at all. But I don't put much trust into the answers at ask yahoo lol, so I thought I'd ask here. I'm apprehensive right now about even eating anything out of fear the pain will come back. And I definitely can't go a week without eating or with the pain I felt earlier.

Is this warm water + walt solution going tp continue to work? I didn't expect it to do anything but it took away 99% of the pain within a few minutes. Oragel was 9 bucks at the local store, not gong to waste my money if the stuff won't help any more than water+salt.

Orajel is the same local anesthetic the dentist uses before administering the novacaine. Use a shitload of that and some tylenol.

hummm I should get it then, the box said don't use it more than 4 times a day but if it works I might use it all up. Hummmm wonder if I could get some Novacaine somewhere lol...

Novocaine is obsolete. They use lidocaine now... Which is also what happens to be in the topical gels/liquids. (i.e. orajel).

Don't try shooting it though

shit if the pain is like before, or worse I might just be willing to try ha. And I got a ton of Meth heads on my street, I'm sure any one of them could give me a great overview on how to inject drugs.

When I had a toothache that ended up being a root canal, the dentist said 2 things: Use Tylenol & not Ibuprofen, and don't use anything cold to try and numb the area. Something about your teeth will get sympathy pains if you use ice to try and make it feel better.

thanks for bringing up Root Canal, even more expensive and a lot more painful lol. Damn this just isn't going to end good for me no matter what happens. I'm scared to even brush my teeth because I'm thinking that will bring the pain back.

Floss around the affected area- you probably have something near the root that's irritating the tissues.

I got myself a cordless waterpik a couple of months back. You should see the junk it gets out from between my teeth. The amount of food that can get stuck in your teeth is amazing.

Go to the drug store and get something called "Red Cross Toothache Kit." It comes with a clove oil solution, some tweezers and some little cotton things to put the clove oil on the tooth.

If a tooth hurts that usually means its infected so applying orajel and all that *caine based stuff will not do anything but numb it for a few minutes.
Be careful applying any source of heat, heat makes infections grow faster.
Hydrogen peroxide, the kind you buy for $1 a bottle, rinsed over the area can keep it from getting more infected.


Baking soda also works well and is cheap.

I found aleve to work the best for the pain.

That's good that warm salt water is taking all the pain away. If it starts hurting more try to see a dentist sooner. If pain and swelling increases dramatically, especially with a fever, talk to a doctor immediately and go to emergency treatment (hospital/clinic/etc).

it is infected, usually the dentist will ask you to do a root canal. but you should just call back and ask him to get you some painkiller before the appointment... usually they will do that for you.

Or PURE vanilla extract (not the cheap imitation stuff) use a cotton swab and dab it on the tooth/gum area and it'll numb it.
