Have a ti4600, will 9600xt improve much?

system specs:

P4 2.6ghz
1gb 3200 ram
geforce 4 ti4600
win xp

I'm looking for a temporary video card upgrade to tide me over for a few months...the .ATI 256mb 9600xt is affordable, but wondering what kind of boost I can expect from the $175 card? Is it minimal or night and day? Thanks

For $175 you could probably find a 9800pro, but even then I'd probably say wait for a bit, at least for a few days until R420 info is released so that you can see the whole picture. Are you heavy into gaming or 3d apps?

gaming, first person shooters mainly...want to keep the budget under $200 for this upgrade. The 9800pro's on newegg are over $200...but you're right, I should wait for ATI's new lineup and see what happens...maybe even when Nvidia announces pricing for it's new cards.

Without AA/AF it?s more of a sideways move -- I?d say the 9600XT will be slightly faster but not enough to notice it unless you were running a benchmark. In some of the new shader intensive games like Farcry the 9600XT would be noticeably faster.

256MB 9600XT have slower clocked memory 250 DDR , 128MB cards are 300 or 325 DDR.

Don?t need 256MB on a midrange card --especially when it?s slower.

With AA/AF the 9600XT will be about twice as fast as the 4600 in a lot of cases.

With a $200 budget you probably can find a 9800 and make a bigger upgrade.

alright, thanks for the advice. I'll either spring for a 9800 or wait and see what the next gen lineup costs in a few weeks.

Even if you decide on the 9800, I'd still wait because the release of new cards will likely drop prices on the 9800s, especially the XT.

even with AA/AF, the 9600 hasnt got enough power to run the latest games with AA/AF, you WILL get PS2.0 capability (which the ti4600 lacks) but the performance will even be lower in some cases, imho you'd be better of to wait after the R420 launch and see how the prices of the 9800 react.

The only advantage would be better performance with AA, AF enabled. But $200 will easily buy a 9800pro in another week or so. The 9800pro would be a better move IMHO.

$200 will buy a 9800 Pro today =) newegg.com ... or you can keep an eye out at Best Buy etc. cause they've been having built by ATI ones on sale for $200 after rebates.

I'm going to wait until the new ATI cards are announced...what's the latest expected date for that? Then I'll decide on the 9800pro or perhaps one of ATI's new cards a step or two below top of the line. I'll have to look at the benchmarks to see how much improvement over the 9800pro these cards will have to justify the costs.

EDIT: Actually, I'm sure there will be some sort of announcements at E3 in two weeks...I'll wait until after then to see what's up.

May 4th for the X800 Pro and XT, probably a month or two later for the X800SE.

either wait for the new cards and for the prices to come down or get 9800NP for ~$173 on Newegg.
9600xt over 4600 is a waste of money

Who cares if it's 2x as fast when in both cases any new game is unplayable.

 I used a previous GeForce4 Review where both the Ti4200 and Ti4600 were tested and the author of the article said the Ti4600 is about 25% faster. I didn't bother linking that article because the performance of the Ti4200 compared to the Ti4600 isn't what the discussion is about. I merely stated that the Ti4600 is about 25% faster so people have an idea of how a Ti4600 fits into the review I posted a link to.

*EDIT* You ASSumed I "made this deduction based on the link..." I didn't say that.

Grab yourself a 9800 Pro from the FS/FT forum. Most of them are going for around $180 shipped. Add the Arctic VGA Silencert + OCZ copper RAMsink combo from SVCompucycle and you should be all set to hit >= 9800XT speeds! :D (for ~$205 or so).

I myself am in the process of trying to sell my 4200 Ti. I'm planning to replace it with a DX9 card of some sort. I've really been thinking about a 9600 Pro, since they are now scraping up against $100. Does this seem like a good upgrade, or should I wait and see what's gonna happen to the 5900XT and 9800 Pro prices as we get closer to the 6800 and X800 release dates? I'm looking for the best deal in the $100-$150 range.

Hold onto the Ti4200 unless you want to use AA\AF.
