Have a random shutdown problem

For a while my computer would randomly shutdown around twice a week. Now it's doing it 4 times a day. I did overclock the cpu at one time but since the random shutdowns began I took it back to normal.

I ran memtest and my memory is fine, so i don't believe it's the memory. I've ran antivirus and spybot, making sure it wasn't some type of malware/spyware/virus.

The PSU is an antec 430watt. and the rest of the rig is in my sig. Is there a program to where I can check the voltages on my power supply? If so, what should I be seeing or what shouldn't I be seeing.

All help is appreciated.

Joe

edit:

Well I upgraded to a fortron psu and upgraded my ram to 2x1gb patriot. I haven't ran memtest on it yet, but I'm assuming it's ok.

As for the random shutdown problem. It still does it. I've had this computer at my home and my apartment at school, and it does the same in both places. My roommates all have computers and theirs don't have the shutdowns, so I'm assuming power sags aren't a factor. Anyone else have any clues what this may be?

Download and run "Everest" motherboard utility.

That should give you a reading on your power supply and about anything else you may need.

Good luck.

Sorry: It looks like they have just this month discontinued their home edition. Maybe you can still find it on another download site.

Try here. link

didn't really see much information it gives for the power supply

Voltage Values:
CPU Core 1.38 V
+2.5 V 1.14 V
+3.3 V 3.23 V
+5 V 4.92 V
+12 V 11.71 V
+5 V Standby 5.08 V

How do those look?

I am no expert in these, but your 2.5v reading looks fairly deficient. I really don't know what that voltage rating is for, my systems have no reading for 2.5v.

Maybe someone else can tell you if this may be the source of your problems, I sort of suspect that it is !!!

Good Luck.

If you have a spare PSU, hook it up for several days, even if it's a cheap Aspire.

If the shutdown problem goes away, failing to return. Buy a Fortron PSU.

Intermittent power spikes or dips are the devil to diagnose.

Yet another post on this board about an Antec 430.

P.S. - Since he said that, it reminded me to ask if you have your system on a good UPS. If you don't you should.
