Or is there a better way to move my stuff from the old to the new? Don't need the application files....just Outlook mail, contacts, etc. plus Word docs, Excel docs, etc.

Of course this is WinXP I'm talking about. Also, both machines are currently on the home network and visible to each other.

It should work just fine. I have done it several times with no problems whatsoever. It doesn't ( or shouldn't ) matter XP to Vista.

I would recommend for the future having set folders for your excel files word files etc. That way you just copy the folder. LOL, Windows ME...is there anything it doesn't suck at?

I'm not a great fan of the file transfer wizard. I've had unsatisfactory results a couple of times. It CAN work, but sometimes it doesn't.

Just transferring the needed files across the network is probably faster for most folks. Only problem is to be sure you get everything you need. Certainly don't erase your old hard drive until you are sure you got what you need.

Most common data needed:

1) Files on the Desktop (or Desktop(s) for multiple users)

2) My Documents folder(s) content

--for XP, the above stuff is found in the "Documents and Settings" folder for each user

3) Email

--Email store location depends on the email client you are using.

4) "Favorites" for Internet Explorer
