If you're the manager of over 15 thousand students (U of Alabama), and I'm not to sure how many are on the residential network, think of all the possible viruses, hacks, worms, etc... You HAVE to lock down the ports. Do you think they care about you, your games or email? They don't.

Also, someone mentioned it earlier, why are you restarting your system? ipconfig/winipcfg should take care of that.

Sounds like you're only thinking about yourself... think about the big picture

nope, ipconfig doesn't do jack with the network issues.

Yes it will.
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Your statement leads me to the conclusion that you don't know CRAP about networking or computers.
You letter leads me to the conclusion that you're a whiney little kid who doesn't know what he's talking about.
If you send that letter in, it will be dismissed out of hand for the immature whiney crap it is.

No, ipconfig does NOT fix it. Specifically, it is an issue where the existing connections are allowed, but all future connections are rejected. So you can be on AIM or something and all of a sudden, no webpages would load, while AIM continued to run. If you were to restart AIM, it would be unable to connect.

But of course, you would never admit that you don't know what you're talking about since you just called the fourth person to tell you this a "f*cking moron"

One last time, ipconfig commands have no effect whatsoever. In fact, here is an e-mail I have:

Dear Students,

Since the start of second semester a few of you have had problems with your Internet connection. We believe that this problem may not be related to your specific machine, but possibly an issue with certain halls, floors, or general areas of ResNet. To find out where the problem is occurring we would greatly appreciate it if you could respond to this e-mail if your computer has experienced any of the following:

-Loss of Internet connection for no apparent reason. (This happens as often as ever 5-10 minutes or sometimes randomly throughout the day.) Restarting your computer sometimes solves the problem.
-You can chat on AOL or MSN, but you can't browse any web pages.

If you are experiencing any of these problems, please respond to this e-mail and state your name, room and hall and any specifics (how often, what times of day, etc.) to how this problem has affected you.

If you have any other Internet problems please contact the MIO at x0863.

Thank you for your cooperation,

ResNet

I have an idea. Let's all email the admins at his U and tell them that forums.anandtech.com is a really bad place and that they should block it immediately! 😀

That tells you that what WE'RE suggesting WOULD work ignorant punk kid.
If restarting your computer fixes it, so will a full release/renew with ipconfig.
That's all restarting will do for you.
It's just releasing and renewing your DHCP info.

Obviously, you are incapable of understanding how a college network is set up.

You repeat the same, vague complaints over and over again. And over again. Cut it down to 3 sentences, cut the letters out of magazines, and sign it in blood. Someone else's blood... they have DNA testing now.

Obviously, you are incapable of understanding how a college network is set up.

Yes, because a COLLEGE network is difference from standard networks somehow.

COLLEGES use PIXIE dust protocols and servers that dish out FAIRY host control protocol assignments!
Obviously you're an ignorant punk kid. Look at that letter. Just look at it.
Tell you what, print that letter out, put it in a time capsule. Open it in 10 years. You'll laugh your ass off at the punk kid you were!

Actually, it is just a tad bit different that someone's network at home that consists of a Linksys router hooked up to a cable connection.

Sound like a bad nic.

You sir, are a f*cking moron. Monitoring my own communications is NOT against the AUP. My server is hosted through ServerMatrix out of Dallas. Does that sound like I am running a f*cking server out of my dorm? The network issues are NOT hardware related and are NOT fixable by ipconfig. I am NOT complaining about excessive games, the point is they block all the games to start with. You can't play them.

Call me all the names you want. I specifically said that I wasn't sure if you said that you were running it out of your room or not. So chill out. Either way AIWGuru statement sounds about right.
It is against the rules to monitor network traffic period. Not too sure what you plan on doing.

If your letter "touches" the dean and he/she sends it to the director of IT, I wouldn't be suprised if they just kicked you off. I'm not speaking out of hate or anything, but think about it. Out of all the problems with security and viruses, would you want to take time out of your day and fix one kids problems by allowing him to play games?

Think man...

NO! You don't say, ignorant punk kid!
What would I know when my first degree was on the topic and having administered huge, huge, networks?!
Probably nothing.
I mean, maybe on a COLLEGE network, when you restart your computer, it's actually NOT releasing the DHCP info and renewing it. MAYBE it's uncoupling the PIXIE ETHER from the ethernet cable and recalibrating it!

Right, it is a bad nic, sure. Of course, the fact that the same problem exists on two different machines, 3 NIC's, and 3 OS's is meaningless.

Exactly, it's not a bad nic. But ipconfig /release and then /renew will fix it.
Unless of course it's a FAIRY ETHER issue! (unique to College networks!)

sure, yup, ipconfig fixes it

does that make you happy now?

Of course, having looked at the problem for the last 6 weeks, I just could not possibly have thought about using ipconfig.

Translation: "I don't know what that means."
What is SOCKS2HTTP?
It's a lightweight SOCKS proxy tunneling TCP/UDP traffic through HTTP proxy or a firewall. Works with programs like KaZaA, ICQ, Morpheus, WinMX, AOL IM, MSN IM, Trillian, FTP, telnet, ssh, and many others. If a client program does not support SOCKS protocol Socks2http works in conjunction with a "socksifier", like Sockscap32

Yeah, I'm a net admin here at UA. It's not that much different. Granted the linksys stuff doesn't have some of the more advanced features our Cisco equipment has, but it works.

don't waste anybody's time sending the letter. And you're a fool for calling names of the people who WERE trying to help you here. You are obviously too ignorant and immature if all you're going to do is bitch. And you repeat the same points over and over in your letter...get some better foundation.

And why do you want to play games or monitor your website? Crimony, go out and get a life! You must be the dork we see playing your dungeons and dragons on a friday night when there's a floor party.
