Anyone with experience buying electronics from foreign? specifically will the format be usable (pal vs ntsc?), is it worth the price (a new 42" plasma/lcdtv costs like 1400 here, im looking to pay like 800 or 900). My friend says he would bring it back on the plane. Also what about the taxes on goods brought in via this method?

Small gadgets, yes.
Large TV, no.

You lose warranty, the possibility of damage during the flight just to name a few.

Does he have enough room to store that thing on the plane? I'm certain it doesn't qualify for carry on and it doesn't fit in the cabin... 2nd thing is it would count as another luggage, but there are limits to the amount of luggage you can "bring."
With something that big you will have to declare it and it could mean tarriffs or taxes.
Warranty will also be gone unless that company has a worldwide warranty policy.

A 42" plasma screen may be 'thin' but the box it comes in is HUGE. At least 20" x 50 x 40" box that weighs at least 40kg+.

You're going to have to pay customs duties on it when he arrives. Also might have to pay cargo fees as well. Not sure it would qualify for baggage.

Prices are cheaper in the US than in Hong Kong and other Asian countries.

So it's a waste of time.
