Have a freesync monitor, but can't take advantage of it. Go with 1060 over 480?

I bought an Asus MG248Q Freesync 144hz monitor in preparation for the 480. However it seems it's gonna be another month before AIB versions come out. During this time I looked into if running in borderless windowed mode will still allow freesync to work and it seems not to. I run this node because I have dual monitors.

In this case, assuming prices at around $250, should I just get a 1060 and rely on the high refresh rate rather than the freesync feature for smooth game play? I play at 1080 with settings one click down from max.

Just wait for 1060 reviews in order to get rid of that future buyers remorse.
Most people think that the 1060 is gonna end up very close to the rx480, but is better to be cautious.
Considering that you already own a f-sync display, going for the rx480 makes 100% sense in your case.

Why do you believe that its going to be another month before the custom cards come out? Do you live in the US?

Nobody can answer that question yet, however doubt you'll get high enough FPS on either the 1060 or 480 to offset the visual quality Freesync provides on the lows.

You have to wait for reviews. Rumors say the 1060 will be marginally faster than the 480. But AIB versions of the 480 come out this week. Yes they may sell out fast, but they will be available before the AIB 1060s.

You need to wait for 480 AIB reviews to compare to the 1060 as almost all 480s moving forward will be of that design and not reference. You'll have higher clocks and better heat dissipation then. Sorta like how everyone demanded 980ti benchmark scores come from highly overclocked custom versions, so too should we evaluate the 480 in the same way if that's what is mainly out there on the market.

It would be a total waste to get a card that's incompatible with FreeSync but only marginally different in performance.

Getting a 1070/1080 might still make sense because the raw FPS will go higher and overtake the benefit of FreeSync. But to get something that's in the same performance bracket makes 0 sense

1060 is faster and has a better overclocking ability.

Are you just guessing here, or do you have some proof that nobody else in the public has?

It may very well be faster, but your statement is told in a way of fact, not opinion.

Also factor in how long that card will last. NVidia has proven to not care after a couple of years.

You can't know exactly how much the card will last, beside that this is what we looking for, a card that will last for those "couple of years".
You are not expecting a card that will last 10 years aren't you?
And I don't think that you can decide relying on one case.

1060 might only be faster in older games. rx480 should be a significantly better for new games coming out.

Why?

Agreed. 1060 and 480 essentially look to be competitors that will provide roughly the same gameplay experience. Even if the 1060 does turn out somewhat faster (in DX11 anyway), these cards are likely not dramatically apart in performance. Of course we shall see though when real reviews hit.

The 1070 is different, as you say. On a 144Hz monitor Freesync is less important than on a 60Hz display and a radically faster card can make sense over a slow Freesync card. But FS still provides a bit of a better experience on a 144Hz display and thus if the cards are fairly comparable it doesn't make sense to forgo Freesync for a relatively minor DX11 advantage, especially if it's inconclusive if that lead will hold as more DX12/Vulkan games become standard.

I was going to get the 480 thinking it would be perfect for the 1080p 144hz FS monitor and then upgrading to a Vega card for 1440p 144hz monitor next year but now I might just get a 1070 and near saturate the benefits of a 1080p 144hz monitor.

But per the advice in thsi thread, I will wait for reviews of the AIB 480s. Scratching the 1060 off the list for now.

Power color is going to release the Devil card next week around the 22nd. It's said to be clocked at 1400 boost according to leaks so watch out for that one.

1070 is almost twice the price of a 480. Not sure if its worth that premium. Might be better off just getting a cheaper 980 TI / Fury.

Same here!! I also bought a Asus MG248Q when it came out, and still waiting for the RX480 months later! Don't even know if it works properly at 144hz and it's long after the return period :-(

So another dilemma. I'm playing overwatch in borderless window mode, 1080, monitor set to 100hz, 120hz and 144hz, vsync off and cranked the details down to get +100fps.

But the weird thing is that if I turn vsync ON, it'll lock the fps to 60fps but it'll be a lot smoother than at 144hz and vsync off.

Whys that?

Also since I have the monitor refresh set to 100jz,shouldn't vsync on allow me to get to max 100fps rather than 60fps?

If I just bought a Freesync monitor, I would definitely buy a RX480, not a GTX 1060 and I own Nvidia cards in BOTH my rigs below! Only AMD cards take advantage of Freesync.

MSI's G1 gaming edition card in both 4 & 8 gb variants is also to be coming around sometime soonish. At videocardz in comments, one person noted that it's supposed to go over 1400mhz too. Seems like AIB ones when OC'd can give about 15%-20% more performance quite easily in DX12 games, and about half or so in DX11. One can only wonder what AIB's will do at around 1500mhz and beyond, if there are ones that clock as much. May be it would plateau a bit, or may be somewhat minimal gains over 1400+. Sapphire mentioned that their cards clock upto that speed. Asus Strix will come late, sometime next month, is what rumours say. Sapphire's already at it too, and well, iirc OCUK has placed an order of what 5k pieces(?), and that's just from one AIB.

What it seems like is that while the production is decidedly higher than Pascal chips, but the demand is outstripping production, by a fair margin. Seems like miners are at it again :p So if you want one, you're better off buying these on the day they're hitting shelves, and not pussy-foot about.

Yeah but I'm not going to be able to play overwatch in full screen so to me freesync isn't so much an advantage anymore. Whenever I try to play in full screen, and alt tab out, there's maybe a 30% chance overwatch will turn into a black screen and I'll have to close it out and reopen it again.
