Have a 290, worth it to upgrade to a 1070 for $350?

I game at 1080p @ 144hz. The 290 is starting to struggle with newer games and does not overclock at all. Worth it to upgrade to a 1070 or sit and wait for Vega sometime in Q2?

It'd help if you could list your full system specs. If your goal is to hit 144hz, a very strong CPU is usually needed.

1070 is a good upgrade for a 290 user, especially at FHD.

As for Vega. With rare exceptions, AMD usually undercuts Nvidia so you can wait and try to get a 1070 equivalent for less, or a faster card for the same, or for 1070 price cuts in a possible price war. But we don't know when Vega is coming, and even if it's soon we don't know if they will have a 1070 competitor right away (could target higher only at first).

My crystal ball is hazy, all it can tell you is price-to-performance generally increases over time so make a decision based on your willingness to get better performance now or later.

1070 is very far into its release cycle at this point, waiting for Vega would be the best bet. If you wanted a 1070 should have bought one 9 months ago :)

No, because it will be made obsolete by the new products later in the year which themselves would quickly be made obsolete by newer products the following year. I still have a sour taste from purchasing r9 380 for $212 only to see $180 RX 480 12 months later....

I went from a 290 to a 1070. At 144hz and this late in the cycle I wouldn't get anything less than Gtx 1080 performance. The prices for that should come down soon.

...What? Welcome to how computer technology has been for... 40 years. I guess you're being sarcastic, sorry if so.

As for OP, really depends on what you want/need. $350 for a 1070 minus whatever you can sell the 290 for (~$125?) would certainly be a noticeable upgrade. 1070 is nearly twice the performance.

However, I'd probably just turn some settings down and try to survive until Vega comes out.

I ended up getting the 1070 (1080 isn't in my price range), will probably kick myself later. But, if the Vega that is in my price bracket is really great, I'll just get it and throw the 1070 in my 2nd gaming rig which will inherit my current 290.
