Currently have an AM4 5900X water cooled CPU. Bored and looking for what the next CPU AM4 upgrade I should go for. Looking to get a reasonable performance improvement.

Obviously the 7950X. Show up at AMD headquarters and demand a sample system or wait till end of September if rumors are true.

lisa.su@amd.com <<< Contact her and convince her to send you a sample system for evaluation purposes. You will most likely need to sign an NDA.

Just bored, have some cash to spend in upgrading the CPU if worthwhile.
If you have enough money to waste, get the 5800X3D.

OR

What's your Geekbench ST score? Should be around 1700. With a 12900KS, you would get 2100 easy. Plus, it would more reliably result in increased performance in most games. 5800X3D suffers in some games due to lower clockspeed. But if you do go with 12900KS, it better be with the highest speed DDR5 with lowest latency. This would be the "I laugh at the thought of money going down the drain" rig.

Some games will see some nice gains with the 5800X3D over the 5900X; others not as much. Check out some reviews since it all depends on the games you play. Losing 4 cores might be painful depending on what you do.

I bought it because many of the games I play benefit from it.

But sounds to me like you need to find a new game series to enjoy. I'm getting back into older games like Fallout 4 and ARMA 3 because the 5800X3D is leaps ahead in performance over my old CPU.

It might also be fun to just tune your system for better efficiency. 5900X and 3080 ti will enjoy a nice undervolt!
