So, I'm looking to put together a nice (but cheap) PVR setup. What does this use for a channel guide? Is is free or subscription based? Sorry for the newbie questions... Just getting started researching... :)

Great card, great price. I use one in my MCE box. I'd pick up another (and another digital STB :|), but I'm waiting for the August update to see what MS means by "native digital cable support."

Best single-tuner card out there... at that price, this may be time to upgrade my dad's old WinTV-GO.

mJg,

Thanks for the rebate warning.

Did you buy it at the store or order online?

Would you, and if so how would you, be able to use this tv tuner to record channels from a dish or cable service set top box, or would you have to change the channels manually?

hauppauge's website says this card needs a "Pentium® III processor 733MHz or faster", i'm currently running a Duron 950mhz cpu. will that be enough? TIA

It comes with a ir blaster that changes the channel on the set-top while u change the channel on the pvr remote..

the best pvr software to use with it is Sagetv, i have it running along side a pvr usb 2 with no problems.

Will this card work with MCE2005?

I know there is a PVR-150-MCE but I like this because it's cheap, local and comes with a remote.

I'm just finishing putting together a DVR. This price is great, if the rebates come through.
You folks may want to check the forums @ byopvr.com
they're invaluable for questions regarding dish/cable setups, software choices, etc. They really know their stuff.

I am doing the same thing. Sage tv PVR150 retail PVR USB2. How do you get the hauppauge remote working ? I find myself having to shut down SAGE TV, disable PVR 150, restart hauppauge IR , enable 150, start sage each time I reboot. For some reason the hauppauge IR software cant decide which IR receiver to use if there are two IR receiver cards. Any Ideas ?

Yes the card will work, but the remote will not. MCE is very fussy with its remotes. The remote and card will work with SageTV.

Edit: This one and this one are the only two supported remotes for MCE. I prefer the first one because the numbers light up and you can see them in the dark. It's worth the extra 6 bucks.

dbleoslow,

Thanks, I'm undecided on which OS to get. I only plan on using this as a DVR. No photos and no music.

Should I go with MCE2005?

You can try SageTV first and see if you like it. The give you a 15 day free trial. If not, go with MCE. There are positives and negatives to both. You can only use up to 2 tuner cards with MCE, more with Sage. MCE is easier to configure (in my opinion), Sage is more customizable. MCE saves in it's own proprietary format (you can still burn to DVD), Sage creates .mpg files. I've tried both. I'm currently running MCE but am thinking of switching back. Check out the forums at Sage to see what you may be getting into. I haven't tried their absolute latest version but it's worth giving a shot. Oh one more thing, MCE only lets you save to one drive. Sage lets you specify multiple drives, folders. That's my main reason for possibly switching back. I just noticed that the other day.

I've heard nothing but good things about BeyondTV you may want to give them a try as well.

I agree I've heard good things about them as well. My opinion is research all of them a little and then focus on the one you want and learn what you can. I looked at both Sage and BeyondTV at first and decided to go with Sage.
