Oh it will be a huge hit and cause some controversy for sure which is rather the point of the developers I'd say because it boosts sales.

As far as public outcry, I doubt many will care so long there's no nudity. That's what seems to upset people the most. Don't dare show a boob, but it's okay to shove a 4 foot dildo down an innocent pregnant Mother's throat just for kicks.

Maybe you missed the entire violence in video games thing that raged for years. There was a huge controversy about violence in video games and it still goes on today. I do agree that Americans are weird about depictions of sex, but it isn't as polarizing as you make it out to be. Witches 2 had tits and no one said anything. GTA5 had topless lap dances and blow jobs by hookers and no one said anything. I guarantee this game will be all over the news if they catch wind of it.

Nah I remember that. Actually plenty of people have complained about sex scenes and 18+ nudity content in video game forums and on Steam in various threads. I've seen people banned on Steam or had their screenshots administratively removed for posting unaltered in-game screenshots of nudity and sex scenes in games for sale on Steam. From my own personal experience, it creates far more of a stir than the over the top violence content which can be found all over.

Most of the people who're upset about nudity in games don't read the rating on the back of the box.

A German media outlet recently interviewed the main developer of Hatred, and posted it online. This does a pretty good job of shedding some light on who the devs are and that their views are on their game. (for context, the developers are Polish).

http://www.gamona.de/games/hatred,interview-pc:article,2549037.html

He's goes into the game's technical details and mechanics a tiny bit, but these are the most interesting bits of the interview to me:

gamona: Was there any specific moment or a specific event that preceded your decision to create Hatred ?

Jarosław Zieliński: Well, there was no particular moment. I always wanted to make a spiritual successor of the first Postal game. Many years have passed and then the perfect moment arrived. I gathered the team and funds and there we go. Anyway - it's just one of some projects I've had in mind, but the only one we can afford right now.

gamona: A lot of games out there allow their players to randomly kill people, but those aren't nearly criticized as much as Hatred. Do you have any explanation for that? Is there any difference between games like Grand Theft Auto and Hatred?

Jarosław Zieliński: In Hatred we don't justify the players deeds in any way. This is the main gameplay feature – killing. We are not trying to mask it by any "higher values" at all. Killing is always evil, therefore we decided to make an evil game about killing. By the way - in GTA you always play a greedy criminal who kills to get money. I still prefer the honest way of Hatred's main character - he kills because of his hate.

gamona: A lot of gamers are worried, that Hatred might be exactly the kind of game, that gives the mainstream press the fuel to brand all gamers as violence loving, rough and aggressive people. Do you understand those concerns?

Jarosław Zieliński: No, they're simply exaggerating. Let's face it - most games are about killing, we're just telling it straight. There is also no simple, plain evidence suggesting that games are pushing people to go on a killing spree. Such controversy as ours happened before and will happen again. And we gamers and developers are still standing here, aren't we?

gamona: Did you make certain enquiries about mass shootings, like watching actual footage of rampages?

Jarosław Zieliński: No. It's not some kind of simulator, it's an arcade game, for Satan's sake. I would rather mention movies like Rampage or Natural Born Killers. You have to know that mass shootings aren't a problem in our country, so we're not especially touchy about them.

gamona: What would you say to someone who lost a loved one in a mass shooting and feels hurt by your game, who can't understand how anyone can develop a game where the player is supposed to shoot as many innocent people as possible?

Jarosław Zieliński: Innocent virtual people. That's the main point. Nobody get's harmed by our game. Anyway - war is a terrible experience for all soldiers out there, what would you say to them while playing Battlefield? But the difference is that soldiers are tough guys, not some moaning pussies, so they don't complain about their experiences being reference for virtual entertainment. Back to the beginning of your question: I'm really sorry for anyone who has lost beloved ones, but it doesn't have anything to do with our game.

This part of the interview struck me the most:

gamona: Your trailer hit the internet just a few days after Anita Sarkeesian had to cancel a speech because of a mass shooting threat. Is this just a coincidence or have you brought forward your announcement?

Jarosław Zieliński: We've had no idea about this. We don't follow all the news from the western world, while there is a war right outside our border, you know.

Puts things into perspective a bit.

Why the hell is everyones reactions about this tending towards it being either done for the outcry/pr or done by some angsty 12 year old.

Couldn't it just be that some of us want to simulate murdering loads of innocent people and are willing to pay for that, so there's a market for it and they're simply filling that niche.

Some of us don't care about "outrage" of "killing" virtual "people", it's pixels on a screen. I think the fact that some people are morally outraged at this is hilarious. It's a game, it's pixels on a screen, get over yourself already.

Here here.

question about why this game is getting so much hate. I understand it's uber violent and you're killing completely innocent people. But, the other night I was playing Plague Inc on my iPhone and I killed every person on the planet with a disease I manufactured for the sole purpose of wiping out the population. Hatred's bad, but Plague's okay, I'm guessing because one's a shooter? In Hatred you are killing some people, in Plague Inc you're trying to kill everyone. They're both simulating killing innocent people, just in very different ways.

So if I understand here, playing Hatred would make me a borderline psychopath. But playing Plague Inc, hay nothing wrong there.

Kill one man, and you are a murderer. Kill millions of men, and you are a conqueror. Kill them all, and you are a god.

Really, I think it has to do with the personalization of it. Plague inc. is abstract, it is in essence a spreadsheet simulation. Hatred makes you chase down people and stab a knife in their spleen.

In psych studies they have found that even when they truly believe that they are causing serious harm to another person, it is much easier to push the button to do so if they can't see the person they are harming. In Plague Inc. you don't see the people, just the numbers.

What other games glamorize serial killing? I felt like I was watching COLUMBINE THE GAME just then, not good at all...

All the usual suspects. All you do in a shooter is shoot. Even in an RPG you don't sit down for tea and crumpets when you have a problem, you split them open with a two handed sword. Humans love violence, always have and always will. We may not have a Colosseum now but there is still violent media. Or just turn on the news.

you seem to be missing his point, in Doom you don't serial kill innocents in the street, you kill demons of hell.. slight difference

Wow.. I guess it was only a matter of time before someone took it to this level. I doubt I'll be playing this game. While I do love a FPS I do think there's a huge difference between this and Far Cry 4. I'm just not into chasing people who are screaming begging for their lives and slicing their throats. I'll say the devs have a right to make it, and sell it to whoever wants this stuff. If this is your time of thing, I'd say more power to you, but I can't help but feel whoever is really into this is the last people I'd want with any power..

This game goes way too far, I wouldn't be surprised if more than a few domestic or school shootings to come are helped along by a game such as this. Still, I think it has the right to exist and be purchased.

This game is NOT what freedom of speech is about...

Just like separation of church and state does NOT mean government void of God...
