HATE WINDOWS SO MUCH!!

Not that i like linux either but anyways, heres my problem...

I got infected bu some virus and adware, took about 20 mins to clean up and eradicate, really nasty thing, infected about 600+ files and made my process count go from 40 to 50 odd. So anyways after its all sortec im left with this bullsh!t How the heck do i fix the text for my icons?? Its taken me even longer to try and make them fade in like they did before than it did to fix that virus. Theres no option for no color or fade to background in control panel, and i turned on the fade thing in the system-->advanced-->performance bit, it was already on anyways. So how do i sort this unbelieveably simple thing out?

So you've got 'Use drop shadows for icon labels' enabled then I take it?

You could also try switching to 32bit color instead of 16bit.

Well if thats 32bit then there's something seriously wrong, lol.

Maybe try re-installing the video drivers or running a repair install on XP.

Well i just found out that the virus is still here. Its called cmdService, and windows seems to have recognised it as "network monitor" its in the system services bit, found a really over complicated solution that involves safe mode and installing a couple of apps.... needless to say im not going through all that crap.

Ill sort this thing out first and then try and fix desktop again.

I beat my head against a wall for a day-and-a-half trying to get rid of cmdService w/ no luck. And I tried EVERYTHING.. sorry but this is prolly one of those times you should just bite the bullet and start over w/ a fresh install.

Well in all seriousness it isn't Microsoft's fault 😉 Seemed you just got reamed by an extremely annoying virus...tahts all.

Btw that an insane # of games...how do you manage to game when it seems you have to do what seems like real work (i see the enviornmental anaylsis file or something)? Wouldn't that suck up all the gaming time?

Nah switch to linux...no need to spend so much money buying a Mac and giving up his PC. Then use CrossOver Office if he needs his office utitlities...or get the free VMware server and install it to use any windows specific apps that he may need; that way anything that borks windows won't matter.

I've used Webroott SpySweeper and Norton Anti-Virus to protect my machines and my students too.

You can use the freebies, that's up to you.

If you schedule regular updates and scheduled sweeps, you should be rid of your problems for good. But since we all live in a imperfect world, you got to run 'them sweeps' at least twice a week. Failure to do so will result in tragedy and disaster.

Don't know how to schedule? Well, see your local computer geek or go to a reputable computer shop.

Renew your subscriptions before they expire. "BEFORE" is the word, so be prepared for dishing out some big bucks if you forget.

Everybody wants to save, so we all use the freebies. Don't you notice that they all have a premium version available?

So, spend a little now, or a lot later. It takes a while before that sinks in, Oh Well, we're all human.

Ill never give in! Ill fight it on the desktop!! Ill fight it in the system folders!! Ill fight it in drive D:!! NO SURRENDER!!

I think its dead now anyways, AVG,adaware, spybot & the other apps i downloaded seem to have killed it and any spawn of it (it spawned a lot, or was a spawn of some other thing), i dont see the "nerwork monitor" system service anymore either.

Im a student 🙂 I make time for everything, i got three reports due in for next week and a webblog to add stuff too (part of a uni group project) but today me and my other flatmate still managed to find time to build a really big barricade in the hall and keep my other flatmate locked out  funny as hell.

Also for the record i managed to fix the desktop problem, there was some weird link in control panel--display--desktop--customise desktop-- web. It was ticked and somhow messing up my desktop. Deleted that and now alls well 🙂

How did you get infected unless you were using IE? Windows runs fine just long as you don't use internet explorer for more than 5 minutes... (or 1 second if browsing)

Solution:

Run in a no frills user account, runas to install programs. Change the administrator account name, and give it a 12+ character password of random characters #%\/?!@FTW90 (etc.)

---

The thing is it takes one simple thing to get a virus, unless it's a remote exploit, which it doesn't sound like it was. That thing is called user error. Whether it's an infected email, malicious website, or bundled malware, the responsibility lies on the part of the users. If you can't exercise proper computer usage safety practices by all means don't blame the OS.

I've run absolutely no virus scanner for now 5 years of home computing. Mostly win98 early on and now Win2K. I've had *zero* I repeat *zero* virus. Malware on the other hand is another story, as you used to download freeware programs and they wouldn't tell you what was bundled. Now they put in the disclaimer of what software options are bundled for fear of being sued. For the most part I would highly suggest a firewall, and just watching what programs you install, websites you visit, and email attachments you open. Those are the most important three things to having a "happy" computing experience bar none.

I found a dodgy looking file, it was amongst other files of the same type but it looked different, like it was from an older version of windows or somthing, after i clicked it bad things started to happen heh.

Fair enough, but i would rather blame the OS. Its easier 🙂 Anyways, read the above post! "I  windows"

A very good anti-malware program is ewido, it is very good at cleaning all types of viruses, worms, etc.

ewido anti-malware

Here is a guide to using it if you need it:

http://rstones12.geekstogo.com/ewidosetup.htm
Ewido Setup

Run this in both reg. and safe mode along with other scanners you have. Try running Mcafee Stinger also:

http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
McAfee Stinger

it is standalone so you don't have to install it, and gets rid of some very nasty bugs.

Just an FYI... I just tried Ewido's AntiMalware program. It *REALLY* bogged down my system while it was running. It started scanning a Linux .iso file on my desktop and before I canceled the scan it was using 380MB of RAM! :Q While it was scanning it took about 30 seconds to flip from window to window or raise/minimize an open window.
