my mom says that wearing a hat (winter hat or baseball cap) won't let your hair breathe and will cause it to fall out faster. thoughts?

EDIT: yeah, she did say "hair follicles" to be exact.

Well hair is already dead cells so it doesn't breathe..
She might mean your hair follicles.
I haven't heard that before. Sounds like one of those strange parental superstitions. As long as you don't wear a skin-tight cap that restricts blood flow to your scalp, you shoudl be fine. Most hats are made out of breathable material anyhow.

Most times hats cause a build up of sweat and grime - causing damage to hair folicles. So keep it clean and loose.

At the same time you can wear a hat to protect from the sun to help prevent hair loss.

<---32 and I haven't worried about hair loss in 5 years. :)

i don't usually give a sh1t how i look but i hate the look of thinning hair. i shouldn't have to worry about this for 30 years!! in my perfect world. hehe.

that's what i kind of thought. it's hereditary hair loss i'm quite sure: my dad's bald, my grandpa on my dad's side is, my grandpa on my mom's side is, my dad's brothers are, but it's not too bad actually for my mom's brother's.

Do youR research.....wearing a hat causes hair loss. Period.

But the fact that it is extremely prevalent in your family means you're probably bald by 30 (depending on your family). Sorry. Take some precautions now and you may be able to prolong it.

<---all men on both sides of my family were bald by 30...I took precautions and have just a slight frontal loss.

DON'T WEAR A HAT!!!!!!!!!!

heredity has the most affect.

-edit- meaning if your older brothers, father and his brothers and your grandfather and his brothers have a full head of hair...no worries. But if they're all bald...you're gonna lose you hair sometime.

It is heredity, or the propensity for hair loss, that is causing your family members to go bald. Wearing a hat does not, in and of itself, cause hair loss.

Absolutely, but wearing a hat does contribute. Try google.

Myth: Wearing a hat causes hair loss.
Fact : As long as you don't regularly wear a hat that's so tight that it restricts circulation--blood flow to the hair follicles--this will not cause hair loss. It can, however, damage hair because of the effects of sweat, dirt, and skin particles that can clog pores.

Please provide a peer reviewed, repeatable, published study that shows wearing a hat causes permanent hair loss.

Hint: you wont.

It's an old wives tale.

Please provide a link with the scientific research proving that.

Thats what I thought.

GeeeZ! Amused One decided to post what I was about to post. :( :p

Really, though, I still believe that wearing hat often can cause hair loss. I don't care what those so-called experts say. I don't particularly like guys who wear hats all the time, as I'm afraid they'll go bald. And it isn't pretty, since they don't usually get rid of everything on their heads.

Bull. Been wearing a cap for 20 years. got a full head of hair. It's hereditary. Check on your mothers' side of the family. You inherit that trait from her.

I used to wear a hat all the time, I was thinning a little bit in the front and the hat hid it. Then I got tired of it and stopped wearing a hat. I look so much better now without the hat.:)

Your mom is right. :p

At least for EXTENDED hat wearing.

Want "proof" in an example?: Turn a bucket upside down on the lawn. Remove it after a few days . . . grass is dying where it was covered . . . of course, your hair is tougher than grass - BUT, same principle. ;)

Wearing a hat does not cause hair loss.

The above links are from a google search of "Wearing hat cause hair loss"

Note that ALL of the links said that wearing a hat does NOT cause hair loss. I took each link in the order it appeared in my search. I did NOT omit any links that said wearing a hat DID cause hair loss. Search for yourself.

Those of you wanna-be intellectuals trying to claim otherwise are just proving yourselves to be bigger morons than you already are for disputing it in the first place. Now shut up because I was right. QED. :p ;)

It's simply amazing how old wives tales will stick.

...proof that if you tell a lie often enough, people will believe it, and even become indignant if proven wrong.

Again, just for the blind believers out there:

Wearing a hat does NOT cause permanent hair loss. No, none, nadda, nil studies have shown this. Not a single one.
