I thought Intel was getting out of the desktop board business. It wouldn't be a moment too soon, they've always been as ho-hum as you could get, no complaints about reliability of course, but so boring! But I guess we'll have to endure another generation of white bread motherboards from Intel, just as I'm sure we'll be enduring more ice-water-on-the-party posts from ShintaiDK.

P.S. Agreed on the Gigabyte offerings, they are offering a real challenge to the other makers, imo. I know they won me away from Asus recently, so far, so good.

I thought it was just retail boards? They still have to make reference boards to send to partners, which I think would be most of the work anyway.

Oh, I'm sure you are right, but the graphics posted looked like they were for retail releases.

Wasnt the news that it would happen over the next 3 years. And not just from one day to the other?

Sure, but the sooner the better, imo.

Why? Before Intel entered the motherboard industry we got utter crap. If you are old enough to remember those days.

And I dont like the bling bling and useless crap that Asus, MSI, Gigabyte etc infest their boards with.

To each their own. The need for Intel's intervention in the motherboard market is long past. If you can't find something useful in the offerings of today's motherboard manufacturers, you are either not looking hard enough, being too picky, or are just a hardcore Intel fan rationalizing your choice.

I cant find anything that matches my requirement. Even tho I am sure you wish to label me due to that. But tell me a motherboard that offers me what a DH87FB does, or even the older DH77DF at the same price.

The selection suddenly becomes something between tiny and non existant.

It's nice to see that board with mSATA capability. I concede your point.

ECS has some pretty nice looking Z87 boards. Maybe they will finally pop out of the wood work with something good this year!

Added Gigabyte GA-Z87X-OC Unboxing to OP - http://www.pcworld.fr/carte-mere/ac...el-haswell-overclocking-lga-1150,538441,1.htm (Gallery has 12 Pics)

Now there is a few things that I find odd with this board
1) whats with the two internal usb plugs by the sata connectors
2) 6pin PCI-e Power connector by the PCI-e slots. Why cant the make a standard connector for this additional power.. we have had 4 pin molex, sata power connectors, now this.
3) why a 8pin and 4 pin aux cpu power, why not just use 2 8pins?

i know some of this is a little nit picky but still

About time Asus used a different color scheme on their motherboards,a black case with a window with one of those z87 motherboards would look rather tasty, maybe it is me but the older x38/x48 ROG boards looked a lot meaner then the newer ROG boards which have all been looking nearly the same since z68....

Sadly i am not sure if a 4770k would be a worthwhile upgrade from my i5 2500 non k to consider the upgrade, but the new z87 boards look awesome none the less.

ECS has come a long way i believe,my first and last ecs was a g33 microatx that came bundled with a q6600 from frys,a moderate overclock to 3ghz for some reason made all the usb ports and eventually the ps/2 ports blow despite not touching the voltage on the q6600 lol.

The benny hill theme song used to play in my head when i would be gaming and then my usb mouse failed to work, with me putting the mouse into another port.:p

meanwhile there are those of us who have had ~4.8+GHz 2600Ks for over 2 years and ultimately have yet to see a CPU that much better outside of the few instances where the extra cores of SB-E can make a difference (of which even those CPUs aren't that much better than the 6 core Westmeres that have been available since 2010...)

sorry, but if you have to root against technological innovation when its actually been stagnating, you probably shouldn't be spending on it in the first place

Sorry for the probably noobish question, but why do all these boards still have different numbers of power phases and huge power delivery systems with radiators? Weren't those supposed to be integrated into the CPU with FIVR?

Is there a good table that shows the different chipset features? My head hurts just looking at these considering the basic stuff like which of them can oc in the first place. I just want to eliminate the ones I won't even consider and then maybe I have a hope of choosing among the rest.

Also, is there anything known about the chipsets for Broadwell that could be an argument for going cheap this time and the getting a new (still 1150) mobo for Broadwell?

9 series chipsets will support SATA Express. And whats more or elss about it. Might get a few more USB3 ports too.

For 8 series:
