The important thing to realize is that CPUs can go into and out of idle states very quickly, well under a millisecond. Assuming the game is GPU-limited or you're using vSync, there is a fixed amount of work to do per unit time and the CPU will idle the rest of the time.

OK, I'll give you that if the game is GPU limited, the amount of energy used could remain equal. If the bottleneck was at the CPU, however, the S model would still use less power, albeit at the cost of FPS. The former scenario would be much more prevalent, however.

Never thought about that, interesting... Thanks

Perhaps the CapStone line is alright, but most other Rosewill PSUs are indeed, junk. Maybe not quite as bad as Apevia and DiabloTek, but more along the lines of the CoolerMaster PSUs. Decidedly not great.

I would much rather have an Antec VP-450, than a Rosewill PSU.

@Bateluer

You don't have AC? How can you survive 🙂

Moderate overclocking can be done just fine even with higher ambient temperatures. In any case I think it's pointless to not pay that $10 or so extra for a K chip when you're going to get a Z87 board anyway. And I think even with a non-K chip you're likely to upgrade the cooling on the CPU to something quieter and cooler.

I have AC, just set it at 82 in the summer. Keeps the bill manageable. But with the thermostat at 82, the computer room is usually a couple degrees warmer. In the past, its made ACs on an A64 X2, a Conrow E6600, and an E8500 unstable several months out of the year. It simply wasn't worth the hassle to to manage the frequency myself. Not when modern CPUs nearly all dynamically OC themselves with Turbo and whatnot.

How loud is the Haswell stock cooler? I'm using the stock Sandy cooler now and it makes no difference to me . . . but 10 years of working avionics shops and datacenters have kinda deadened my hearing in those ranges. :/

No prob. If you're CPU-limited but your framerate is above 60, you can also save some energy by turning on vSync or an in-game FPS cap.

We're not talking about "most other Rosewill PSUs," we're talking about one line in particular, the Capstone.

Id disagree, rosewill PSUs are generally fine, most of their branded stuff except for the stallion series I believe, are actually pretty good. Tachyon, capstone, and even hive are generally pretty good, I have a hive 550 watt and its been fine.

Sandy still had soldered-on IHS. The fact that Ivy and Haswell use thermal paste between the IHS and the CPU instead of solder makes them run a bit hotter and louder

I wouldn't go with Lian Li at the moment. Fractal Design Define R4 would be my choice, an absolutely great case, so feature rich, nice looking and well designed, and the price is right.

4670K $220 or 4770K $330 @amazon
Arctic Freezer i30 $30 @newegg
Asus Z87-A $145 @newegg
Seagate ST3000DM001 $120 @amazon
Capstone 750W Modular $97 @amazon
Define R4 Black Pearl $80 @amazon + Bitfenix Spectre 140mm $12

= $814 shipped with 4770K

The Define R4 just went up in price last night to 109.99. 🙁 At both Amazon and Newegg. That brings my list to just under 840 shipped, with a 2TB drive and extra 140mm fan for the case.

Carbide 500R is still $75 shipped, AR, good through 19th

Graphite 600T is $90 shipped, AR, good through 17th.

I don't like the nook of either of those. Too gaudy.

Define R4 Titanium Grey w/ Window $80 AP @ newegg. Promo ends 8/15

8/15 is too early. 4th week of August to the 1st week of September is my time frame, I expect prices and sales to float a little. I have a class I want to wrap up before I get sidetracked with a new build. 🙂

Newegg as the Fractal Define R4, Titanium Gray with Window for 70 right now with a coupon code and free shipping. Not really the color I wanted, or and I'm ambivalent about the window. Would rather not have a window.

Thinking of jumping on it because it expires on the 23rd, but that'd mean I'd have the case a good two-three weeks before any other parts. No way am I going to move all my current parts into the new case, only to move them out again less than a month later. 😛

Anyone follow these sales more closely, do they come on sale for comparable prices often, or is this a price I should jump on?

Sales vary with what items come up and how often. However, if you aren't looking to get the majority of your parts for 2-3 weeks still than you are actually in a bit of luck. Remember that Labor Day is coming soon and Newegg, as well as other retailers, usually do big Labor Day and End of the Summer Sales then.

$70 for the Define R4 Windowed Version is not a bad deal all things considered. You might see a different version of the Define R4 come up for sale with the big Labor Day and End of the Summer Sales, but there is no guarantee. However, given the popularity of the Define R4 series I would say that there is a good chance that you will see at least one version of the case on sale during those big sales. Will that version be what you are looking for and will it come down to a similar price level? No guarantees there.

$70 is good for an R4. The MSRP is $110 and they usually float around $90.

The windowed variants are 90 with free shipping for Labor Day, but the windowless black model I'd prefer is still 110 with 15 for shipping. 😛

Tomorrow is pay day and I've 99% finalized the build list. Not sure if Newegg's Labor Sale is live yet or not though. A few of my parts have Labor Day advertised and some coupon codes, but there's not a banner on front of site yet.

^Newegg sent me an email for their Labor Day sale and they have the black pearl R4 windowed for $79.99 after promo code.

Yeah, got that tonight after sifting through some 400 emails. 😛

Not much applies to whats I was looking at though. There's a Rosewill RD700 700W PSU.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...17182278-L010D

Lower wattage than the Capstone, and only 56A on the 12V rail, but it is only 48 dollars. 675 reviews and a 4 Egg average. Not seeing any glaringly bad review on a general Google search either . . . worth it to save a 50 bucks? Its also not modular like the Rosewill Capstone or the Seasonic M12II SS750AM I was also looking at.

I take that part of being modular back, the Rosewill Capstone is not modular either.

Looking at one of the three PSUs now.

Seasonic M12II SS750-AM
