Haswell G1820 (dual) versus AMD Sempron 3850 (quad) - power consumption

I don't recall offhand what the power draw was of my AM1 Sempron 3850 quad-core system. I probably should have checked it before I ended up rebuilding the ITX case with a Haswell 1150 mini-DTX board.

Anyways, my G1820, under full compute load (both CPU cores, and the iGPU, on Collatz Conjecture in BOINC), is reporting under 34W total Package Power in HWMonitor.

Figure the SSD is at most 5W (5.0V, 1A), and the DVD drive is negligible when not being used.

So, figure maybe 50-60W at the wall, at most? (That might be a high estimate).

Single-threaded performance (browsing in Waterfox), is SO much better than the AM1 1.3Ghz rig. Power consumption seems similar.

Power comsumption is not the same at all, i have 30W peaks at the wall with an Athlon 5350 and a HDD + SSD, and this is with Prime 95 and the Athlon using AVX in this test, in LuxMark CPU + GPU it s no more than 26W, also at the wall..

I thought I remembered my AM1 quad rig drawing roughly 50-60W at the wall with this same PSU.

I can have a more scientific comparison for you, when I get the rest of my AM1 rigs out storage. Then I can do a direct comparison.

Edit: I will say that 30W at the wall sounds quite low to me. 25W TDP, plus RAM, SSD, DVD, and the losses from a conventional 250W ITX PSU, at full load? I would expect to see around 50W at the wall.

Edit: I guess 30W might be believable if you were using a laptop power brick style PSU.

27.4W at the wall for a Haswell Celeron G1820 and a Radeon 7700. I assume that's idle though.

With the system in my signature, under Prime95 (AVX), the total system load watts at the wall is as follows:

1600mhz: 49.8w
2000mhz: 52.6w
2400mhz: 56.2w
2800mhz: 60.0w
3400mhz: 75.2w
4000mhz: 96.6w
4400mhz: 141w
4500mhz: 156w

The video card idling is responsible for around 12w of that.

At idle, the system is around 37w (again, at the wall).

An Athlon 5350 TDP doesnt get above 15W, this can be witnessed in any review when noticing than the power delta at the main is about 15W/0.81 (for the PSU and VRMs efficencies at 90% each) at most, in this respect the Sempron 3850 is not as efficient as only the cores consume less but the uncore use about the same power.

Power at the wall will be largely dependent of the PSU efficency, and at those levels usual ATX PSUs are generaly quite innefficient, with a BeQuiet 400W, wich is good at low levels, power drain is below 35W at full load.

FTR the measurements i made where on a MB with DC input and a 16V 65W adaptator, the DC input require a third DC converter that add some losses but that s still less than the ones of an ATX at low power.

Btw, do yourself a favor and get a 5350 instead of a 3850...
