Topic says it all -- for those of you lucky ones picking up Haswell-E, what platform are you upgrading from?
I'm obviously not your target audience, but I think you'd be interested to hear why I'm
not upgrading.
I'm currently using an i5 750. I need to upgrade this rig because I'm seeking to upgrade to SATA3, as my 850 Pro is noticeably held back by the SATA2 ports on my board. CPU performance is fairly good, however I would probably enjoy gaming much more with an up to date CPU.
Lack of money aside, there's a few reasons why Haswell-E is unappealing to me right now. Primarily, it's the cost. Even if I were fairly wealthy, I would be more interested in the 4690K/4790K. RAM is unfortunately very expensive relative to where things were a year ago, and DDR4 worsens the issue (although DDR4 doesn't look too unreasonable). However, I can't justify doling out $100 or whatever for something that will give me next to no benefit.
The higher frequency of the Devil's Canyon processors are also of more use to me, as I simply don't have the workloads that would benefit from more cores at the moment.
I don't need the PCI-e lanes and the ports the E platform offers.
I do see myself being able to leverage an E-series platform in the future, but at the moment, it's just not of any use. I'll be looking into Broadwell-E and Skylake-E, for sure, but Haswell-E just doesn't offer enough benefit for me right now. I have other things I need to prioritize, like multiple monitors, and a better GPU.
