...help crack the TiVo backdoor password.

Um, no, I don't think so. Two thumbs down on this idea. :disgust:

*Edit: I stand by the above comments - I will not retract them.

While Tivo adheres to the "Open Source Program" and don't think they would invoke the almighty DMCA, most would probably agree that the DC Community that is more known to look for new stronger Encyrption, ET, Genes and cure for Cancer would not "want" to be involved in this type of "project". Simply put, it is not a "Good" cause.

Edit: So for those that own a Tivo and want to use DC probably fine on an individual basis but proably shouldn't be looking to "recruit" others to join in on the "effort".

Does that put this thing to bed?

Should probably add this type of "Project" (use the term loosely) in the big info and recruiting thread as an FYI only.

just FYI its already been cracked, users have gone in and modified the code of their Tivo to invoke the old password, this search is simply for fun, Tivo is aware of this system modification and aware of this DC effort, this is basicly a one up on RC-72 and not a violation of any DMCA as the solution to the "problem" has already been found, this is a test of brute forceing encryption schemes.

and just to knock some of you off the high horse, searching a narrow band of intermittent radio signals is a good idea? and valid scientific effort? a successful one? cure for cancer run by major drug companies so they can make a dime off of sick people? give me a break. I don't own a TiVo I own a RePlayTV so im not recurting for any benifit to me, but its already been proved that 64 bit encryption is sufficiant agenst a brute force attack.

forever people have bitched because they are ignorant of DC projects and I stand behind DC 110% there is no theft going on by obtaining the backdoor password, it enables features that are in the testing phase, or have yet to pass TiVo's strenious Q&A process. TiVo is very much aware of the project, and has stood in the middle, if any word from tivo to stop this project it will be haulted. TiVo at any time can change the password and re-encrypt locking the backdoor once again.

The difference between RC5 and this TiVo thing is that the RC5 project is/was an officially sanctioned challenge, fully legitimate and endorsed; cracking the backdoor TiVo password is not. Likewise encouraging others to get involved in doing so is likely to fall under the guise of "hacking". And while, TiVo may not yet have taken an active stance against this project, this doesn' mean it's legal to do - the contract is being broken to do this thus making it illegal.

Were you not an "Elite" member, I believe this entire thread would've been locked by now. :disgust:

Couldn't agree more!

The only reason it wasn't locked earlier is because we weren't aware of it. To say it was because he was an Elite member is totally unfounded
