at work we rent moving trucks,
i've heard hundreds of stories about how people have been screwed by uhaul, because their truck isn't there when they say it will be. so people panic and call everywhere to find a truck.
you can tell when u haul overbooks, because the truck calls go from 5-10 a day to 50 a day.

we charge a little more than uhaul, but our trucks are like new and we always have your truck. yet so many people whine about the price.

it seems like to me that everyone has at one point been screwed by uhaul or knows someone who has.
yet people still rent from them, why do people take such a chance over $10-20?

Yes, I rented a truck to move some furniture from a city I was purchasing it to my home. On the day of the rental, I was told I had to go to a small town 45 minutes north of the city I had planned on renting from. Since I was already coming from the south, this added over 2 hours to my time to move some furniture.

For my next move, I went with Budget and was very happy.

We rented a U-Haul when we moved a year ago. The fvking truck died no less than 2 miles from the U-Haul place and the mother fvker manager refused to swap it out for another one. He sent a mechanic and we sat there for 3 hours while he fixed it. That and the employees at the location looked and acted like the biggest bunch of white trash i had ever seen. They even started hitting on my fiancee while we were in line.

Never again will i deal with that POS company.

Not really screwed me, but definatly lost my business for a while.

On my last move I got the truck and took it home, got it half packed with my stuff and then the place I got it from calls me and tells me it's the wrong truck. They say someone else has my truck and I have theirs, and we need to switch them. Well, about 2 hours later and numerous phone calls and it's still not fixed. So I call the place up and tell them I'm taking this truck because I need to move now, and I'm really not concerned that their records are screwed up and the wrong truck is in the wrong place.

So we repack the whole damned thing because of course we unpacked it thinking we were switching trucks. Drive it down to the destination, unpack, and settle it.
I left the truck at this place that they told me to return it to, so I go in the next day to turn in the keys and they place tells me they arn't a uhaul dealer anymore and that I need to take it in to this other place across town. Of course that other place is closed that day, so the truck is already a day late.

The next day I go and return the truck to this other place, who then gives me load of trouble because the numbers on the truck don't match, and it's a day late. After complaining until I talk to the shop manager I'm rather exhausted at this whole ordeal. They did take the truck back, and they also removed the extra day charge uhaul tried to pin on me for their mistake.
On top of all of that I was made aware that particular truck was designated for local rentals only and really wasn't fit for long distances. Glad I made it the full 200 miles without any major problems. Otherwise uhaul would have been refunding 100% of my money AND taking care of the logisitics of moving me.

Needless to say I won't be using them again.

On more than one occasion. The worst and last was probably the time that I arranged *a week in advance* a small truck (12 foot or thereabouts) to travel ~ 600 miles.

The day of, The Uhaul place gives me a 23' Behemoth with bald tires, and leaking fumes into the cabin from a blown exhaust gasket that is about as noisy as my truck was when I had straight headers... very clearly an "in town" rental and dangerous even at that.

After calling several local places who didn't have any trucks available, and UHaul corp - who were throroughly unhelpful, I ended up not driving that day, and lost a $100 non-refundable one way plane ticket as a result, not to mention canned plans and general inconvenience.

Consequently I have resolved that the only contact I will ever have with UHaul again will occur from distance I can throw a brick.

If you haven't had a bad experience with UHaul, it's only a matter of time.

When I moved from Michigan to Indiana, I used Penske - awesome experience. I got a brand new (less than 5000 miles) 2k4 15" truck for a one way move. The truck ran great the whole time, plus they were the only company I looked at that offered unlimited mileage for the trip - I could have put 4,000 miles on it and it would have been the same price as if I put 400 miles on. Plus, they were the cheapest by far - after you apply the web discount and AAA discount (if you have AAA), it came out to well over $100 less than Uhaul's best price for the same thing (well almost the same - Uhaul put a 450 mile cap on the truck. Anything over that is charged by the mile  )

Seriously, if you're looking to move, consider Penske. They rock :D.

Oh, FWIW if Penske's not available in your area...my local post office has a "new resident" package you can pick up in there that has a 10 or 20% off (don't remember which) Budget truck rental coupon in it. I found it when I filled out my change of address form. YMMV on that though.

I used to work for Two Men and a Truck. Man that was a fun job... I could live off tips and put checks in the bank! Kindly old people unable to move their own stuff... who were lonely and liked talking to anybody in their house...

I haven't had any bad experience with U-Haul, though there was one time when the loading ramp broke off on one side while I was dollying up a dresser :| But all the kids around had been jumping all over it and running up and down it when nobody was around (it was an apartment complex).

We've used Bristol rental company over U-haul. Mainly because they never have anything availble. I guess it was a good thing, cause the trucks from Bristol were great.

So, when I went to college and had to move my stuff to Berkeley from South Bay, I called up U-haul, and they were all booked. Then I called Ryder, and asked them about their prices. The clerk answered "seventy" per day (holy cow!), but I didn't hear him right, and thought it was $17. Even cheaper than U-haul - yay!

So, I moved all my crap, dropped off the keys in the after hours box, and drove away. Two days later they charged my card, and I found out the hard way what the real price was :(

I graduated from college and found an apt in South Bay again. Called up U-haul and arranged the truck. Came to pick up, and they give me this POS with less than a quarter tank full! (wtf is that?). I filled it up to get to Berkeley and back, and drove to Berkeley. Loaded all the crap in - and the friggin' truck wouldn't start.

I spent 4 hours waiting for a tow-truck that took us to the nearest Berkeley U-haul center, which was closing in 15 minutes. And the manager of the store was like: 'tough luck. Can't do anything'. That really was the last drop: I raised hell in the store until he gave me a brand new emergency truck. Luckily, my borther helped me move, so the two of us managed to move all the stuff from one truck to another and get out of there quickly...

And after all this, the management in the original store where I picked up the first truck was acting like they did me a favor by renting one of their trucks: 'well, you did get a replacement, didn't you?'

Assholes.

All I rented is trailers. I pick one out myself, hook it up myself, and drive up front and pay for it.

I hate UHaul and will never use them again. Last time, which was the last straw, I spent 45 minutes picking up the truck as some out of the way gas station from some non-english speaking person. I couldn't understand anything he said and it took him forever. No joke, 45 minutes before I even got the keys. This pissed me off. 20 minutes later, I realize the truck doesn't have working AC. So, I spend the next 4 hours driving in GA without AC in the middle of August. Positive note, I probably sweated off a few pounds.

I used Two Men and a Truck to help me load my container for a long distance move from Illinois to Seattle. The Lake Bluff, IL location of that franchise is a mess! They lost my reservation; by the time it was straigthened out I was over 1/2 day behind, then I found out they charged my credit card twice! Hope your franchise was better organized.
