Has this Purevideo business gotten straighten out yet?

After looking into Purevideo many months ago and not understanding WTF I needed or how to set anything up, I tried again recently. Got the newest PV trial and enabled the Nvidia Decoder as an external filter in Media Player Classic. So when I play a DVD, yes indeed the PV icon shows up in the tray meaning it is active. What I didn't know is that enhancements such as noise reduction and the sharpness are off by default and only accessible in Video Options in the new, POS Control Panel. So I turned them on, so they should be active when I play DVDs in MPC now.

But now I'm wondering about x264 decoding. I got some test videos encoded in it but PV doesn't seem to be active when they are played in MPC. I can't seem to add x264 as a media type for the Nvidia decoder filter in MPC options. It's only for MPEG2/DVD.

So do I still need a h264 decoder with Purevideo support? I read about the three: Cyberlink PowerDVD, Interlink product, and some Nero show. I heard the Cyberlink one is the best, but it mentions PowerDVD. Does this mean that to decode x264 with Purevideo acceleration/enhancements, I need to play the video from PowerDVD? I wanted to use MPC for all of my playback (tried PowerDVD long ago, the interface was STUPID). But right now MPC just uses the libavcodec for x264 decoding. And furthermore, all of the h264 decoder aren't free.

So to get x264 decoding with Purevideo, do I need one of the above three programs? And do I require those programs, or do I just need some sort of codec/decoder that the programs install along with themselves so I could use MPC?

edit: Also, where does CoreAVC fit into this? Would CoreAVC provide better decoding for x264 using MPC and skipping Purevideo and any PowerDVD/Interlink stuff? I read that GPU support for CoreAVC is forthcoming, but that in software it is VERY competitive with the hardware decoders even. But I don't think there is any sort of image enhancements with it?

Yeah it is. A comparison of regular PowerDVD decoding vs Purevideo vs AVIVO showed Purevideo just slightly ahead of AVIVO overall due to it's image enhancing features, but otherwise neck-and-neck, meaning ATI is the far better deal since it is free.

But I hear when properly setup, PV is quite good for MPEG2/DVD decoding, and for x264 decoding too (which is still a mystery to me).

As one article said, they are touting these new features and spent all this time on drivers with PV support, etc... yet it is so hard for the average user to setup and understand (like putting the PV enhancements OFF by default in the "Video Color Settings" and only in their worthless new control panel).

I guess CoreAVC is completely separate and offers damn near the performance of hardware acceleration like PV and AVIVO. And hw accel for CoreAVC is "coming soon" but forum posts from many months ago said the same thing.

I'd at least like to compare PV x264 decoding vs regular x264 decoding with ffdshow while the PV trial lasts.

So does anyone know how to enable Purevideo support for x264 decoding in MPC?
