Has this ever happened to you?

This happened to me a twice, and I can't explain it. I was visiting my auntie in Silverspring, MD and stayed over the weekend. I slept in her daughter's room that has been vacant for quite some times because she's away in college. I don't know it was due to my state of tiredness because I drove there, but the first night was a very strange.

I don't really believe that supernatural forces exist, but this event left be baffled until this day. I went to sleep as I normally would, a bit tired and restless due to the strange place. Some time during that night, I felt as something, or someone is holding me down and was smothering me. I couldn't move, I couldn't breath, I wanted to scream but I couldn't. All I did was struggle to break free and it seems helpless. In my groggy state, I thought I saw a shadowy figure at the end of the bed, watching. I still couldn't move or breath, and still struggling as hard as I can. It seemed so real. As I continued to struggle, I began to get angry and thought to myself "what the hell ever this is better leave me alone". Then all of a sudden, I could move and I sprang up from the bed, with nothing stirring and no one in sight.

I felt shivers and cold sweats on my back, and after gathering myself and try to figure out what had happened, I lay back down and drift off to sleep, all the while was thinking to myself "what the heck ever just did that better leave me alone, I don't want to be bothered". And I slept until morning without disturbance. The next three nights were uneventful, but the room felt warmer.

I can't explain it, nor have I experience that again anywhere else (the first time was when I was very little, but couldn't remember too much of it, other than someone woke me up). Have that ever happened to any of you? Or know someone that did? What could be the cause?

Your body produces natural tranquilizers (not sure if they are really tranquilizers, but they have the same effect) that while you're sleeping are meant to keep your body from moving, on occasion you will wake up while they are still present throughout your system and it'll feel like you can't move (because you can't) for a good few minutes. There is some condition (I can't remember the name) in which this frequents a person. It'd suck.

One time I had the caffeine equivalent of like 8 cups of coffee (and this was before I drank coffee regularly, and I was particularly sensitive). Somehow I managed to fall asleep, but I had night terror and really vicious and vivid nightmares about demons attacking me in my bedroom for the entire night. I make sure never consume that amount of caffeine, and avoid drink coffee the afternoon/evening.

I used to have it happen to me fairly often but I guess I have outgrown it.

I've had sleep paralysis on 3 occasions, all last year and all when I was sleeping (napping, really) in an uncomfortable position (2x sitting on a wooden chair, hunched over table, 1 time on a bad sofa). Scared the crap out of me, because I thought I had a stroke or something and I tried to move but couldn't.

This. In fact, a couple weeks ago, I some how woke up while my muscles were still asleep, and my hand was closed in a fist. I couldn't open my fingers no matter how hard i tried. It was pretty annoying and quite scary as it was happening, but I figured it out after it passed and I was more awake.

Yep. Sleep paralysis is supposed to be a pretty frightening experience. Of the many strange, and sometimes terrifying dreams/nightmares I've had, many very lucid, and events of sleep walking or waking up from a dream immediately during some event and thinking its still happening (snake in the bed)... the one thing I've never had to this day is an episode of sleep paralysis. Thankfully, because that one would probably scare the shit out of me.
And even knowing what it really is, I'd too probably think of something supernatural, because I do have a tendency to want to believe in 'ghosts', but have yet to really figure out how they actually fit into the rest of my beliefs. Fact is, they don't really mix but its the only 'belief' that I'm too stubborn to let go of, probably because I still swear to this day I've seen/heard things that can only be attributed to ghosts.

Happened to me probably 5 times my entire life. First time I was freaked out and also saw shadowy figures, creatures, monsters. Each time I've had it though, i was able to get out of it by just telling myself/willing myself to move my arm and once I can move any muscle I wake up.

To help combat it though, try sleeping on your side. I've noticed that I always got this while sleeping on my back.

It's just sleep paralysis though as others have pointed out. Your mind is "awake" but your body is still asleep and it naturally paralyzes it in a sense so that you don't act out your dreams or stuff.

Even though I know what it is now, whenever it happens, it's still kinda scary.

i had something like that also before. i was lying in my bed on my stomach and was half alseep. suddenly i felt as if someone was standing on the edge of the bed. the feeling slowly moved upward, crushing my body down. i felt it coming too, so i managed to get my arms tucked in so i am holding myself up with my elbows. but beyond that i can't get up anymore since it was crushing me from above the blanket. you FEEL it moving over you on the other side of the blanket. so, at that point, i am holding my upper body up on my elbows, and i can't move anymore, and suddenly, i feel someone next to me, and a womans voice whispered into my ear... "why won't you play with me".... with that, i felt an icy chill shoot down my spine, and shook my head until i was free.

another time: i was laying down on my back in bed about to fall asleep. i felt something move up again over the covers. when it got around my waist i reached down, and grabbed someones wrist(?!) it felt very thin, dry, bony. and pulled it up. i immediately got up and am now kneeling on the bed. i can see what i am holding now. it was a girl wearing a white sleeping undergarment, with long jet black hair covering her face, and i was holding her wrist. apparently she didn't like it, and struggled with me. at that point i was scared silly, and again had a icy chill run down my spine. when it got to the point where i let go of her wrist, i found myself in the exact same position, kneeling on the bed. my heart was racing like crazy after that, and i didn't want to go back to sleep that night.

call it what you will, but its still pretty fucked up. the same girl kept coming back over several nights as well. i didn't tell my wife at all about it, since that stuff freaks her out. during this time she had a nightmare also though. she said she saw a girl wearing white with long black hair standing next to the bed watching me. i didn't tell her what i saw. i don't think she would enjoy it at all.

Sleep paralysis it is. In layman's terms, it's basically a mental glitch where your brain drops into REM while another part of your brain is still conscious. Most people experience it at least once in their life. Some people experience it multiple times.
