I used to really like Chris Matthews, but for the past few weeks he has been saying over and over and over again that President Bush is a moron and that he has no idea what he is doing. And he keeps referring to the Bush administration as a bunch of "neocons."

And what's up with his assertion that the Iraqi people like Saddam, and they would hate us if we removed him from power? What is he talking about, and why does he keep repeating himself?

You may be right but I thought it meant something along the lines of they weren't really a conservative but more of a moderate. Of course, everyone is to the left of Pat Buchanan.

The best definition that I can come up with is a conservative who is a war-mongerer.

You are wrong, Dave is correct. It's another way of saying "johnny come lately", or "not genuine".

So then why does he most strongly associate "neocon" with people like Paul Wolfowitz or Bill Kristol or basically any republican who wants to remove Saddam from power? I'm so confused.
 
I don't know anything about Wolfowitz, but Kristol has long been known as a phony in genuine Conservative circles. In addition, Matthews may be operating on the assumption that a true Conservative would not want to interfere in another country under any circumstances. In other words, he's deriding them as "fakes".

Like I said before, I wasn't really sure if I was right. (no pun) I just took it at it's literal meaning which is neo=new or new conservative. I just assumed they were criticizing Bush for being relatively moderate.

Edit: Just found a definition. Google is your friend.

Neoconservative ? A "neocon" is more inclined than other conservatives toward vigorous government in the service of the goals of traditional morality and pro-business policies. Tends to favor a very strong foreign policy of America as well.

But whatever Matthews thinks 'neocon" means, he equates it with someone who he thinks is insane.
