PGR2>>>GT3

Not a big accomplishment since one is two years newer.
True. And GT4 may very well blow PGR2 away.

But we digress, since it anything to support/reject the topic of this thread.

Anyone who hasn't played a PS2 using component video cables and says the GC's graphics are better than PS2's is stupid. I lived for a year using the crappy composite cable for my PS2. Last Christmas I cought a Sony PS2 component video cable and was wowed at how amazingly life like GT3 looked. All my other PS2 games came to life, with much better colors and ultra crisp graphics.

And the GCN doesn't have a component cable available either, right

And if by ultra crisp you mean ultra jaggy, then yes....

The simple fact is that the Gamecube is a more powerful console in actual practice/games (not just theoretical fillrate) than the PS2 is. No surprise considering it came out 1.5 years later. Anybody arguing this is arguing against a basic fact. I'd suggest reading Anandtech's articles on the consoles to start.

You both are clearly geniuses if you think component cables make PS2's graphics better then the GC. As the GC has the option for both S-Vid and Component video cables making your argument entirely moot. Of course composite video sucks, welcome to 1990.

I guess I'm stupid, then.

Like I said, the PS2 is an excellent console, and much better than the GC (in MY humble opinion)... But it does have its limitations, not unlike anything else in life.

Well... Yeah, the xbox looks better, but not better enough to justify dumping the ps2 imho. Slow loading is just because the PS2 shipped with an early DVD drive... 2x IIRC?

I think I'll wait for the next gen and see what I want to switch to.

I still think the PS2 is good, but you are right about the pitfalls... PS3 is gonna be wicked!

I love my Xbox, but will hopefully own a PS2 for the release of GT4...I don't think the console is near the end of its lifespan, there are so many millions and millions of units shipped around the globe that developers will be pushing the limits of the PS2 until the PS3 becomes mainstream.

Ever time I see the PS2 Graphics they do look choppy to me as well
kinda OT
I have an x-box and was thinking about buying a Gamecube to play windwaker, Metroid Prime and what ever the current Mario Cart game is......
I had hella fun playing Mario Kart on SNES in battle mode with friends back in high school (long time ago).

I find that I really don't play the X-Box that much though other than for sports games and I think I maybe the only one on the entire planet that didn't think Halo was the best thing since sliced bread. I would much rather play Battlefield 1942, counterstrike or DOD than Halo but, that just me.
Since I don't play the X-box much it would be hard for me to buy a gamecube because I would be worried that I would never play it and it would just sit around, then again it does seem like Nintendo consoles do seem to have a certain addictive fun factor to them, that to me the x-box never has, so I dunno

Let's say you get the Gamecube and rent a couple of games to see if you'd like them...

Worst case scenario is that you decide the GC isn't for you and you sell it for ~$75. In the end, you are out a whopping $25. Big deal. ;)

Go for it.... Or spend the money on Xbox Live, PGR2, and whatever other Live games suit you. ;)

Consoles suck in general. They reach the end of their lifespan very quickly. Even the Xbox is horribly outdated compared to the PC. Unfortunately, piracy is driving more and more devs away from the PC to the xobx and you get crap like Deus Ex2: IW which is an example of a what would have been a good PC game when it gets xboxized :(

hm..from reading all this information, here is what I've gathered, and some of my own opinions:

PS2 Pro's:
Huge selection of games
Familiar controllers for PSX users
Backwards compatibility with PSX games
Free online play

PS2 Con's:
Slow loading time
no hard drive
Graphics

Xbox pro's:
hard drive
graphics
HDTV support
xbox live

Xbox con's:
controller
xbox live is not free

Gamecube pro's:
lots of games that are Nintendo only (mario, zelda, starfox, etc...)
Graphics
HDTV support
cost

Gamecube cons:
no online play that i've seen so far?
game selection

Some people say consoles are all trash, and PC is the way to go..but multiplayer is easier on consoles when you've got friends over. No need to drag PC's and monitors to each others houses...

Thank you oh mighty authority for allowing us mortals to share in your knowledge....

Both consoles and PCs have their place. It's been that way for over 20 years and it's not going to change anytime soon.

This is a foolish statement. PS2 doesn't really take advantage of using the component out, as it does not have progressive scan out. I use S-Video on my PS2, and GameCube looks better.

I thought the GC was Nintendo's last hurrah?
According to who? All reports are that the big N is working on its next-gen system and plans on getting it to market around the time of the PS3 (smaller time gap then PS2 -> GC)

Nintendo's got a ton of cash. They're fine.

This might not be any indicator of nintendo's future (at least I hope not) but I thought I read somewhere that they won't be showing off a new console at E3 (except for the DS of course). Now, if it's true that they won't be showing off a new console that doesn't necessarily mean they aren't making one it could be that they just don't have anything newsworthy to show yet or they don't want to tip their hand. Hopefully they don't drop the console business 'cause I love my cube and It would be great to see what nintendo comes up with next.
Nobody will be showing off their next generation console at this year's E3. By some accounts, the new hardware won't be out until 2006, and personally that's where I'm hedging my bets.

Yeah, PCs own and consoles are the bitch :p

I do have a PS2 and xobx (and before that DC, Genesis, NES, Colecovision, Atari 2600...). I don't play them much though.

I think more than the PS2 that EA sports has reached the end of their lifespan. They turned out so many great games up until around its 2002-2003 series, for some reason about that time a lot of their games started having little glitches and bugs not to mention long load times that plague most ps2 games. I think it was March Madness 2003 that sealed the deal for me. Bought it because of the franchise and ended up trading it in within a week.

Oh yeah and the stupid no sealing drive that collects dust like crazy sucks too. I started freaking out back when that was my only method of playing dvd's as I thought the disks were bad.

New PS2's can display progressive scan. Soul Calibur II can take advantage of this.

Consoles last about four to five years. How are PC's any different? You'll spend way more than $200 in a few years in upgrades to keep up with the latest games.

As for the Xbox being "horribly outdated", all I can imagine you are referring to is specifications. Who gives a rat's @ss about specifications when playing great games? If you are referring to the games being "horribly outdated", then what does the PC have to compare with PGR2, ESPN NHL/NBA/NFL, Top Spin, Dead or Alive 3, Soul Calibur, SSX3, Amped 2, etc...

Look, the PC is an awesome means of gaming. But there are many things it just does not offer. Personally, I'd rather play from my living room couch, in front of my widescreen TV, surrounded by 5.1 DD sound, than hunched over my (relatively tiny) 19" monitor and (relatively tiny) BA speakers.

If you prefer games on the PC (i.e. FPS's), then that is YOUR personal preference and has nothing to do with your determination that consoles "suck."

my PS2 from launch finally died well not dead yet but no longer reads DVD games

i will try getting cleaner for it but if it is dead i will definitely be replacing it

I also have a dead xbox but i dont think I will be replacing that
and if my GC ever died I would replace that in a heartbeat @ $80

the PS2 maybe the most dated but IMO it is still the most fun to play even with its pitfalls
and I will definitely preorder a PS3

FPS, RTS, RPG, sim, etc... Nothing really against consoles other than PCs own them hands down.

Far Cry, Doom3, HL2, etc and so on...
