Yep, Diet Coke is the Diet version for "New Coke" that died and Coke Zero is the Diet version of Classic. They taste vastly different.

You're a bit confused there. The New Coke recipe is no longer used. Diet Coke is still the same Diet Coke they've always had. Coke Zero uses new sweetener techniques to give is nearly zero aftertaste (hence the name Coke Zero).]

Pepsi Max is similar to Coke Zero, except they're marketing it as an energy drink (drink Pepsi Max instead of coffee in the morning) as it has some ingredients that energy drinks include.

More like, Coke Zero uses modern formulation with the same artificial sweeteners to more closely match normal Coke while Diet Coke has been in the market so long that they don't dare change it. It's actually MORE popular than regular Coke and changing it would be making the "New Coke" mistake all over again. They may have tried to slip a little of New Coke's taste-tested improvements into Diet Coke when they first formulated it because it was unavoidably going to taste different, but it wasn't based on New Coke

Zero gives me serious heartburn, but I do prefer it.

This isn't true. Diet coke was made using it's own recipe which they then used to make the "new" coke flavor people hated, but when they got rid of new coke they didn't want to change the diet coke flavor. Coke Zero is based on the classic formula. Both use aspartame as a sweetener. We've had this conversation in multiple threads here already.

Diet Coke does not use a modified form of the Coca-Cola recipe, but instead an entirely different formula. The controversial New Coke, introduced in 1985, used a version of the Diet Coke recipe that contained high fructose corn syrup and had a slightly different balance of ingredients. In 2004, Coca-Cola introduced Coca-Cola C2, which it claims tastes much closer to Coca-Cola but contains half the carbohydrates. In 2005, the company introduced Coca-Cola Zero, a sugar-free variation of regular Coca-Cola.
