Has NE1 actually had a chance to sample semi-automatic and manual versions of the same vehicle?

No, I'm not talking abou the sh!tty manu-matic slushboxes with manual control...I'm talking about manual transmission with computer controlled shifting (ala the M3/3-Series/Z4 SMG system, Toyota's SMT on the MR2 Spyder and F1 on the Ferrari 355/360).

If you HAVE sampled both (manual and semi) versions of vehicle, which did you prefer?

1965 Pontiac 389ci Catalina with 3 speed turbo hydromatic VS 1966 GTO 389ci 4speed manual... fvck the 4 speed. I'd usually shift from 1st to 4th during daily commutes. Got no thrill from "rowing through the gears". Only good thing about it was feeling the cylinders fire through the shift knob... whoopy.
