I've been noticing a lot more people interested in linux...folks who I wouldn't call part of the geek culture.

So I'm under the conclusion that people these days are more in touch with computers then they used or linux has lots geek culture status.

Windows is popular because it's easy to install/use. With better Linux distros, more people are becoming interested and experiment with it.

I think you're equating geek status with unpopularity... that it's exclusive to the elite. Frankly, I don't know which way you guys would rather have it. Firefox was for geeks, but it's slowly becoming mainstream... sound about right ?

Linux has a long way to go to be as easy to use as Windows. Linux developers are trying so hard to differentiate themselves from Windows, yet they don't realize they must mock Windows to an extent to begin to garner any kind of meaningful following. I am an accomplished PC user, and have been for quite some time. But my few trials with Linux leads me to believe it's just to cryptic for all these typical Windows users Linux plans to overtake. The one word that comes to mind is "automation".

i'm equating geek status with...geek status. For folks who know how to download the latest kernel, compile it with the options they want and run it.

folks who aren't afraid to edit a text config file to run an application (such as x server)

and lastly...folks who aren't afraid of the command line! ;)
