Been pretty happy with the photo quality of my Photosmart 7960...No printer does black and white photos like it...

I think Canon may have improved their quality, their printers used to be crap but my roommate has one and it's NICE. Cheap too, considering how good the photos it prints are. So my next printer will probably be a Canon.

HP is smart. They realize there isn't much money to be made in consumer-level products. They don't target that segment anymore, entry level just isn't their game. It's the same thing GE does too. Those toasters you see at Wal*Mart? GE doesn't actually make them anymore. Someone else makes them and badges them with GE logos for brandability. It's hard to turn a profit in the low or mid- range consumer market anymore. Consumers buy more on price than on quality, so companies with a good manufacturing process that is reliable inherently incur higher costs than those that do everything on the cheap. And that reflects in the current crop of products - nothing lasts 10 years anymore. Not appliances and especially not computers.

I remember 5 years ago telling everyone to always buy HP printers and that they were high quality printers that'll last a lifetime. I even had an HP laser jet 2 that lasted like 10 years! Though, for some reason, HP was just not on my shopping list. I bought a laser printer 2 years ago and just went with a brother - there was no compelling reason for me to spend the extra money on the HP since their printers seem kinda flimsy now. My new printer is a canon i560 and the decision was between an epson and the canon - am I the victim of great marketing by those companies or is HP really losing it's edge?

i agree with that, a similar thing happened to me recently when i was looking at printers.

LOL! You sound like me! Except in my case, its 2 Canon Printers, 3 Canon Cameras, and no scanner.

I do have an old HP Deskjet 812C stashed somewhere, but the ink costs too much to even consider replacing it.

Deskjet 932C working hard for 4 years straight in my office. Not one problem.

I don't pay for the ink, though. :D

I had a canon inkjet that sucked, and a brother inkjet that was a total inkpig with sh1tty print quality.

Finally i settled with an HP lasterjet, and I have been happy with the quality, although it did cost ~300 bucks..

I still find HP stuff to be of good quality. I love my printer (712C) that I've had for at least 6 years. Works like a champ and it never jams. I get at least a ream worth of black printing from one cart. That's ok by me. I just bought a cheapie refurb all-in-one hp (PSC 1210 maybe?) for about $50 and it works great as well. Couldn't ask for more at that price point.

At work all we have are HPs. In front of me we've got a Color Laserjet 5M, Laserjet 4050TN and a CP1700 large format injet. Each works great. We do have Canon copiers tho:p

I still recommend HP printers to everyone tho:)

I used to own a canon printer, but it was a POS. Actually, the one my parents had was a piece as well. They were the BJC4200 and the BJC6000. The 6000 was nice because it used seperate cartridges for the colors, but the paper feeding system sucked.

You are absolutely correct. The BJC printers were POS!
However, the i series is really good. I am on my third, as every time I get one, VeggieFrog wants it and I end up giving it to her. I have the i960 now and think it is well worth the money.

In my experience, HP's newer products seem to fall short. For instance, one place I used to work at used a bank of laserjet 8000 (8150s I think) series printers which would print day and night nonstop without fail only really stopping for more paper or toner and the occasional fuser kit. We had to do an eval of the HP 9000 series printers tho and they were so crappy, we couldn't believe it. Jams every 300 or 400 pages, maintenance took longer. Chassis was more fragile.

Also, I always recommend Xerox printers over HP printers. The docuprint and phaser lines are just awesome.
