Has Customer Service Changed You?

I have worked in a grocery store for almost 8 years. I have worked as a video clerk and a customer service counter employee. I have slowly tranformed from a happy, upbeat guy to a miserable shell of a man. I hate my job. I hate people.

I have learned that 1 out of every 3 people I wait on are complete morons. People gripe about the most trivial things. People expect employees to bend over backwards to serve their needs. I don't believe the motto "the customer is always right," but I do try my best to be helpful and courteous.

Example: I work graveyards and we keep very little money in the drawers. I post 3 signs at the door saying I cannot accept $100 bills from 11pm - 7am. I also post the signs in places where customers are sure to seem them within the store. The other night a man came in at 2am and caused a huge scene. He screamed and called me names because he couldn't break a hundred for a $7.00 purchase. Is it that hard to understand that we cannot keep large amounts of money in the tills?

This happens at least 2 times a night. People act so ignorant when they cannot get their way. I try my best to inform customers about the policies at night. I cannot ask each customer if they are going to try to use a hundred dollar bill.

That is just 1 in MANY examples of how people can be. I am sure that tech support people get an earful. I feel sorry for anyone who has to deal with beligerant customers on a daily basis....like I do.

I dislike about 1/3 of people and hate another 1/3 on top of that. Out of the remaining 1/3 1/2 of them are ok and 1/2 are good, thus I like only 1/6 of the population; give me 6 people only one of them I will think is ok :)

Sorry to sound like an ass, but...

Get a better job if you don't like it. There's tons of jobless people that would give an arm and a leg for your job, AND they wouldn't mind putting up with rude customers.

This is yet another example of the importance of a good education ;)

I have one semester to go before I get my degree in Civil Engineering. I plan to accept an offer from the company to work in the main office (Kroger). That is why I am trying to stay with the job. I have a chance to make SO much more money due to my years with the company.

If I don't have to deal with general public/customers, then I am ok.

Dude, just think about how sweet your engr job is gonna be when you get your degree - that should help you get through the nasty nights at work. :)

I've worked customer service for about 5 years (bank teller, dairy queen, staples), but it didn't change me - I guess I can take a lot of crap from people and not let it bother me. That's tough that you're working while doing an engr degree - I respect that. I did that during my first year but I couldn't keep it up.

good luck,

I'm sorry, I'll tell my cousin not to let it happen again the next time we take his chain off and let him out of the house.

I used to be able to take a lot. Other customers would compliment me on the way I handled the situation. Now I am having a hard time dealing with it. I work 40 hours and am at school for 30 hours a week. It is taking it's toll on me. :(

Everytime I get bummed about my cushy office job I think about my summer job senior year in HS and how I got paid $6/hr to work in a hot, dark warehouse, operating a machine, doing the same 20 mindless steps over and over and over. Thank god this guy who did my boxes was a retired engineer who always had a lot of cool things to talk about.
But while I got to leave at the end of the summer, those 4 full-time guys, with only HS educations had to keep slaving away in the shop day after day.

It could be worse :)

When i was in High School i was a cashier for a hardware store. I know what your talking about dude, i hated the public ive seen customers totally go off on our management for stupid little crap. You are right most customers expect too much. I was a lowley cashier, i didnt make the decisions, i didnt make the policys, i didnt stock the shelves i just stood behind my register and took their money. Some people would just expect me to part the red sea for them. I will never work in a postion where i have to deal with the public again.
