Has anyone watched Spaceballs only as an adult and thought it was funny?

My wife has a soft spot for it as she watched it as a kid (as did most kids apparently, I didn't though), and she was showing my clips she remembers from it, and I was thinking, this is the unfunniest (but supposed to be) thing I've seen in a long time.

I never saw it back in the day, and watched it within the last year. I usually love Mel Brooks films(or did when I was younger anyway), but my reaction was "meh...".

It's like Napoleon Dynamite or Princes Bride... funnier to watch with a group of people so that you can quote it after and everyone understands the reference. Otherwise, no, not really funny.

He's gone plaid!

Cant wait till my kids are old enough to watch it with us. One of those lexicon films that should be required viewing at an appropriate age like the History of the World and Stripes

I watched about five minutes of Spaceballs before turning it off. It was annoying, not funny.

It helps to know the cultural references, without those you miss a lot of the jokes.

Never heard of anyone that doesn't like Spaceballs. Same with most Mel Brooks movies, never heard anyone say they are only funny once. Blazing Saddles is just as funny the hundredth time as it was the first. Apparently a lot of this forum's members are damaged human beings.

It hasn't aged as well as Mel Brooks' truly great films (The Producers, Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles). I still find it funny, but I can see how it would come across as unbelievably lame on first viewing.

Was an adult when it came out, enjoyed it then and enjoy it now. Mel Brooks was one of the best and most popular comedy directors in the seventies but it was still good. Spaceballs was after his creative peak but is still good. I always thought the Star Wars movies were kind of weak (I know, sacrilege here) and Spaceballs was a very welcome parody of them.

That. There are plenty of funny bits scattered throughout the movie, but it never builds up any real momentum. It's a good joke followed by two failed references, another good bit followed by a couple more misses, another hit, another groaner, repeat ad infinitum. So it comes across as sort of meh, decent, but it always feels like it could have been so much more. Especially compared to some of Mel's other work like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein which are consistently solid start to finish.

You could be their spokes person for both issues.

I always felt that Young Frankenstein was a lot more subtle than other Mel Brooks films. Plus Teri Garr was adorable.

I wonder the same about Airplane! Which most intelligent people would consider to be the greatest comedy of all time. But how do young people feel about it?

It was alright.

Then, a few years later, I learned about the Star Wars movies.

Yeah....slightly out of sequence there.

I was born under a rock, ok?

I was somewhat bored the first time I saw "Young Frankenstein" and thought "Spaceballs" and
"Blazing Saddles" just sophomoric and slapstick (NTTIAWWT) But the older I get and the more times I see clips and reruns, the funnier I find them.

As with any comedy, the mood you are in when you see it determines how funny you will find it.

Im still waiting for "Jews In Space".
